Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area of the city was 24.68 square kilometres (9.53 sq mi).
The Keystone Centre is a multi-purpose facility located in Brandon, Manitoba. Its main 5,102-seat arena which is known as Westoba Place is the home of the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League and the annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
The International Professional Hockey League (IPHL) was the first fully professional ice hockey league, operating from 1904 to 1907. It was formed by Jack "Doc" Gibson, a dentist who played hockey throughout Ontario before settling in Houghton, Michigan. The IPHL was a five team circuit which included Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Calumet, Michigan and Houghton. The IPHL was instrumental in changing the nature of top-level senior men's ice hockey from amateur to professional.

The 2012 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Manitoba's women's provincial curling championship, was held from January 25 to 29 at the Portage Credit Union Centre in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The winning team of Jennifer Jones, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer and Dawn Askin represented Manitoba at the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer, Alberta, where they finished round robin with a 9–2 record, which was enough to finish 1st place and clinch a spot in the playoffs. Jones would lose both the 1–2 game and the semi-final before winning the bronze medal game over Quebec.
The U Sports Curling Championships is a Canadian university curling tournament conducted by U Sports, to determine a national champion. The tournament involves the champions from each of Canada's four regional sports conferences. The event is sanctioned and held in association with Curling Canada.

The facility opened in February 2010 and features two ice hockey arenas, an aquatic centre, and a fitness centre. Outdoor sports facilities are also located on site.
The 2012 Canad Inns Prairie Classic was held from October 19 to 22 at the Portage Curling Club in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba as part of the 2012–13 World Curling Tour. The event was held in a triple knockout format, and the purse for the event was CAD $58,000, of which the winner, Kevin Koe, received CAD$18,000. Koe defeated Alberta rival Kevin Martin in the final with a score of 9–4.

The event was held in a triple-knockout format, and the purse for the event was CAD$60,000, of which the winner, Mike McEwen, received CAD$18,000. McEwen defeated Glenn Howard in the final with a score of 6–2.

The 2020 United States Mixed Doubles Curling Championship was held from February 27 to March 1 at the Bemidji Curling Club in Bemidji, Minnesota. The twelve teams were divided into two pools of six teams each. Each pool played a full round robin with the top three from each pool proceeding to the playoffs. The winning team of Tabitha Peterson and Joe Polo was supposed to represent the United States at the 2020 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Kelowna, Canada but the event got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will instead compete at the 2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland as the 2021 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Championship was postponed due to the pandemic.
Madison Bear is an American curler from Portage, Wisconsin. As a junior curler, Bear was a two-time United States champion and a World runner-up.
The 2020 U Sports/Curling Canada University Curling Championships were held from March 11 to 15, 2020 at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The winning teams on both the men's and women's sides will also represent Canada at the 2021 Winter Universiade in Lucerne, Switzerland.
