Rafael Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 French Open. It was his first major title, the first of a record 14 French Open titles, and the first of a record 22 major men's singles titles overall. Nadal won the French Open on his tournament debut, the first man to do so since Mats Wilander in 1982, and was the youngest champion since Michael Chang in 1989, at 19 years and two days old when he won the title.
Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez were defending champions, and won in the final 6–4, 7–5, against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Likhovtseva.
Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in the final, 2–6, 6–2, 6–0 to win the singles tennis title at the 2007 Hamburg Masters. With the win, Federer ended Nadal's record streak of 81 consecutive wins on clay, the longest single-surface win streak in the Open Era. It was Nadal's first loss on clay in over two years.
Roger Federer defeated James Blake in the final, 6–1, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 Cincinnati Masters.

Conchita Martínez was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Jennifer Capriati.
Roger Federer was the defending champion, but was forced to withdraw from the tournament before the semifinals because of a back injury. Following Federer's withdrawal, Stefan Edberg and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played a one set exhibition match to make up the evening session.
Liezel Huber and Magdalena Maleeva were the defending champions, but competed this year with different partners. Huber teamed up with Ai Sugiyama and were eliminated in quarterfinals, while Maleeva teamed up with Katarina Srebotnik and lost in first round.
Rafael Nadal defeated Stan Wawrinka in the final, 6–2, 6–3, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2017 French Open. It was his record-extending tenth French Open title and 15th major title overall. Nadal became the only man ever to win 10 singles titles at the same major. He won the title without losing a set for a record-equaling third time. He lost only 35 games during the tournament, his personal best, and the second-best in the tournament's history after Borg in 1978. Nadal also became the third man after Ken Rosewall and Pete Sampras to win a major title in his teens, twenties, and thirties.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the defending champion, but withdrew before the tournament began with a left hamstring injury.
John Isner defeated Alexander Zverev in the final, 6–7(4–7), 6–4, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2018 Miami Open. It was Isner's maiden Masters 1000 title, and he became the first new Miami Open champion in nine years.
Roger Federer was the two-time defending champion and successfully defended his title, defeating Alex de Minaur in the final, 6–2, 6–2. He did not lose a single set in the entire tournament. The victory made Federer the first player in ATP history to win 10 same tournament titles on two different surfaces. It was his 103rd and final ATP title before announcing his retirement in 2022.
Iroda Tulyaganova was the defending champions, but did not compete this year.
Tathiana Garbin and Janette Husárová were the defending champions, but none competed this year. Husárová chose to compete at Charleston in the same week.
While injuries accelerate Vavrinec's retirement, where her last professional match accounted in April 2002 at Budapest, Federer would become the absolute leader in the men's circuit, where he climbed to the top for the first time on 9 June 2003.
