This was the fourth World Matchplay tournament to be sponsored by UK bookmaker Stan James. The tournament ran from 27 July–2 August 2003, and was won by Phil Taylor.

Dennis Smith is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He is a stalwart on the PDC circuit, having played there since 1994, but has yet to capture a major title to add to his collection of Open wins. Smith has a very unusual throwing action, turning the dart into a 'flight first' position before returning it to a 'point first' position, rolling his eyes and then throwing. He has a unique, measured action learning his trade under the tutelage of Bob Anderson.

The Bobby Bourn Memorial Players Championship was a darts tournament staged by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). It originally took place as a warm up to the Stan James World Matchplay in Blackpool every July. However, in 2009, the tournament moved to a new date in January and a new venue at the Doncaster Dome. In 2010, the tournament was moved to spring and held at the Barnsley Metrodome.

The 2008 Stan James World Matchplay was the 15th annual staging of the World Matchplay darts tournament by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, from 20–26 July 2008.

The 2011 Skybet World Matchplay was the 18th annual staging of the World Matchplay, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place from 16–24 July 2011. It was sponsored by Skybet who took over from Stan James after 10 years.

The 2018 BetVictor World Matchplay was the 25th annual staging of the World Matchplay, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, from 21–29 July 2018.
