The 2023 World Matchplay (known as the 2023 Betfred World Matchplay), was the 30th annual staging of the World Matchplay, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, from 15 to 23 July 2023.
Michael van Gerwen was the defending champion, after winning his third World Matchplay title in 2022, defeating Gerwyn Price 18–14, [1] [2] but was eliminated in the first round, losing 7–10 to Brendan Dolan.
Nathan Aspinall won his first World Matchplay title and second Premier title overall, defeating Jonny Clayton 18–6 in the final. [3]
The 2023 Women's World Matchplay also took place during the event, as Beau Greaves won her first televised championship by defeating Mikuru Suzuki 6–1 in the final.
The prize fund remained at £800,000, with £200,000 going to the winner. [4]

All matches had to be won by two clear legs, with a match being extended if necessary for a maximum of six extra legs before a tie-break leg is required. For example, in a first to 10 legs first round match, if the score had reached 12–12 then the 25th leg would have been the decider.

A nine-dart finish, also known as a nine-darter, is a perfect leg or single game in the sport of darts. The object of the game is to score a set number of points, most commonly 501; in order to win, a player must reach the target total exactly and hit a double scoring area with their last dart. When the target is 501, the minimum number of darts needed to reach it is nine. For example, one way to achieve a nine-dart finish is to score 60 on each of the first seven throws, then a 57 on the eighth, and lastly a 24 on the ninth. It is regarded as an extremely difficult feat to achieve even for the sport's top players, and is considered the highest single-game achievement in the sport, similar to a maximum 147 break in snooker or a 300-point game in bowling.
The World Matchplay, also known as the Betfred World Matchplay for sponsorship purposes, is a professional darts tournament and one of three legs of the Triple Crown. It is played in a legs format, and is run by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Nathan Aspinall is the current champion after winning the 2023 edition.
James Martin Wade is an English professional darts player, currently playing in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). He became the youngest player to win a major PDC title, when he won the 2007 World Matchplay at the age of 24. This record has since been broken by Michael van Gerwen. Wade has won eleven PDC majors, third in the all-time list behind Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen.
Michael van Gerwen is a Dutch professional darts player. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, having been No. 1 from 2014 to 2021. He is also a three-time PDC World Champion, having won the title in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Van Gerwen is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.
Stephen Bunting is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation events. Nicknamed The Bullet, Bunting is the reigning Masters champion. He also won the 2014 BDO World Darts Championship and is a twice former BDO World Masters champion.
Peter Stuart Wright is a Scottish professional darts player who plays in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), where he is currently ranked No. 8 in the world. Fallon Suzanne Michelle Sherrock is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Born in Milton Keynes, Sherrock reached the final of the 2015 BDO Women's World Darts Championship, where she was runner-up to Lisa Ashton.
Dimitri Van den Bergh is a Belgian professional darts player who competes in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events, where he is currently ranked No. 9 in the world. Nicknamed "The Dreammaker", he is a two-time World Youth Champion, the 2020 World Matchplay champion, after beating Gary Anderson 18–10 in the final, in his first time competing in the Matchplay, and also the reigning UK Open Champion, after beating Luke Humphries 11–10 in the final.
Gerwyn Price is a Welsh professional darts player and former professional rugby union and rugby league player. Nicknamed "The Iceman", he competes in events of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), where he is currently the World No. 5. He is a 3-time Grand Slam Champion and a former world champion, becoming the first ever Welshman to win the tournament. He is also a former world No. 1.

Nicknamed "Voltage", he became the 2018 PDC World Darts Champion following his victory over Phil Taylor. Nicknamed "Cool Hand Luke" in reference to the 1967 film, he is also the reigning World Grand Prix champion, Grand Slam champion, and Players Championship Finals champion. He also won the 2019 PDC World Youth Championship.

The tournament was held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on 23 July 2023. In this tournament Noa-Lynn became the first trans woman to compete in a PDC televised event.
The 2024 Bahrain Darts Masters was the second staging of the tournament by the Professional Darts Corporation. It was the first event in the season's World Series of Darts. The tournament featured 16 players, and was held at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain, from 18–19 January 2024.
