Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Elena Dementieva in the final, 6–3, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2004 US Open. She lost only one set during the tournament. Kuznetsova became the third Russian woman, after Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova, to win a major that year and overall. This was also the second-ever all-Russian major final.

Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez were the two-time defending champions, but they were defeated in the second round by Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Vesnina.

The 2006 Nordea Nordic Light Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the 4th edition of the Nordic Light Open, and was part of the Tier IV Series of the 2006 WTA Tour. It was the fifth edition of the tournament and took place at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden, from 7 August until 13 August 2006. Third-seeded Zheng Jie won the singles title and earned $22,900 first-prize money.

Émilie Loit and Katarina Srebotnik were the defending champions, but none competed this year.

Anastasia Myskina was the defending champion, but lost in first round to Justine Henin.

Conchita Martínez was the defending champion, but was forced to retire in her quarterfinals match against Gala León García.
