Nadezhda Viktorovna "Nadia" Petrova is a Russian former professional tennis player. A former top-five player in both singles and doubles, she reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world in both disciplines. Petrova won a total of 37 titles on the WTA Tour in her career, 13 in singles and 24 in doubles, as well as over $12.4 million in prize money, making her one of the most successful Russian tennis players of all time.
Flavia Pennetta is a retired Italian tennis player and Grand Slam champion in both singles and doubles. She became Italy's first top-ten female singles player on 17 August 2009 and the first Italian to be ranked world No. 1 in doubles, on 28 February 2011. She became a Grand Slam singles champion by winning the US Open in 2015, where she defeated her childhood friend Roberta Vinci in the first all-Italian Grand Slam final.
Ana Schweinsteiger, professionally known by her birth name Ana Ivanovic, is a Serbian former professional tennis player. She was ranked No. 1 in the world in 2008 after she defeated Dinara Safina to win the 2008 French Open and held the top ranking for a total of 12 weeks. She was also the runner-up at the 2007 French Open and the 2008 Australian Open, losing to Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova respectively. She qualified for the annual WTA Tour Championships three times, in 2007, 2008 and 2014 and won the year-end WTA Tournament of Champions twice, in 2010 and 2011.
Maria Yuryevna Kirilenko-Stepanova is a Russian former professional tennis player. A junior Grand Slam champion at the 2002 US Open at the age of 15, she went on to become a top ten player in both singles and doubles. Kirilenko won six WTA singles titles and 12 doubles titles. She was a three Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist, a semifinalist at the 2012 London Olmypics, and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 10 on 10 June 2013. In women's doubles, she became ranked as high as No. 5 in the world on 24 October 2011, and reached two Grand Slam finals, at the 2011 Australian Open with Azarenka and the 2012 French Open with compatriot Nadia Petrova. Along with Petrova, Kirilenko won the 2012 WTA Tour Championships in doubles and was a bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics.
Agnieszka Roma Radwańska(listen) is a Polish former professional tennis player. Known for making intelligent use of the court, she won 20 career singles titles, two doubles titles, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 2 on 9 July 2012. Her achievements include winning the season-ending WTA Finals in 2015, Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Fan Favourite Award six times, Shot of the Year five times, and Shot of the Month on a regular basis.

Ekaterina Valeryevna Makarova is a former Russian professional tennis player. She achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 8, on 6 April 2015. Her best Grand Slam singles results have come at the 2014 US Open and the 2015 Australian Open where she reached the semifinals on both occasions. Makarova is a four-time Grand Slam champion in doubles competition, having won the 2012 US Open mixed-doubles tournament with Bruno Soares, and the 2013 French Open, the 2014 US Open and 2017 Wimbledon Championships with Elena Vesnina. Makarova also won a gold medal in women's doubles at Rio with Vesnina.
Ana Ivanovic won her first and only Grand Slam singles title, beating first-time finalist Dinara Safina, 6–4, 6–3 to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2008 French Open. Ivanovic became the new WTA singles No. 1 by reaching the final. Maria Sharapova, Jelena Janković and Svetlana Kuznetsova were also in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. This marked the last time Ivanovic would reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for four and a half years until she reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 US Open.

As a doubles player, Kuznetsova has reached the finals of each Grand Slam event at least once, winning the Australian Open twice.
The 2012 Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions was a singles-only tennis tournament that was played on indoor hard courts in Sofia. It was the fourth edition of the tournament and was part of the 2012 WTA Tour. The 2012 edition was the first held in Sofia, having been relocated from Bali, where the tournament was held for the previous three years and called the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions. The tournament was played between October 30 and November 4. Ana Ivanovic did not defend her title this year for two reasons: She did not win, or reach, a single final this year in order to gain direct acceptance, and she did not receive a wild card due to her participation in the 2012 Fed Cup finals.
The 2013 WTA Tour Championships was a women's tennis tournament at Istanbul, Turkey from 22 to 27 October 2013. It was the 43rd edition of the singles event and the 38th edition of the doubles competition. The tournament, held at the Sinan Erdem Dome, was contested by eight singles players and four doubles teams. It was the larger of two season-ending championships on the 2013 WTA Tour.
Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2012 French Open. This was Sharapova's first French Open title and she completed the career Grand Slam. It was her first Grand Slam since winning the 2008 Australian Open and her first since major shoulder surgery which threatened to end her career four years prior. Sharapova only lost one set the entire tournament, to Klára Zakopalová in the fourth round.
Serena Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwańska in the final, 6–1, 5–7, 6–2 to win the Ladies' Singles tennis title at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. This was Williams's fifth Wimbledon singles title and her 14th Grand Slam singles title overall. Radwańska became the first Polish tennis player, male or female, to reach a Grand Slam singles final in the Open Era.
World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka won the 2012 China Open tennis title, defeating Maria Sharapova in the Women's Singles final, 6–3, 6–1. Agnieszka Radwańska was the defending champion, but lost to Li Na in the quarterfinals.
