On 15 December, 92 individuals swam the Preliminary heats in the morning, [1] with the top-16 finishers advancing to the Semifinals that evening. [2] The top-8 finishers from the Semifinal then advanced to the Final then next evening. [3]

Sarah Fredrika Sjöström is a Swedish competitive swimmer specialising in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She is the current world record holder in the 50 metre freestyle, the 100 metre freestyle, the 50 metre butterfly, the 100 metre butterfly, and the 4×50 metre medley relay. She is a former world record holder in the 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle, 100 metre butterfly, and 200 metre freestyle. She is the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming. She won the Overall Swimming World Cup in 2017 and 2018. In 2022, she became the first swimmer representing a country in Europe to win 10 individual World Championships gold medals. She currently represents Energy Standard in the International Swimming League.
Chad Guy Bertrand le Clos, OIS is a South African competitive swimmer who is an Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games champion. He is the African record, Commonwealth record, and South African record holder in the short course and long course 200-metre butterfly and the short course 100-metre butterfly. He also holds the African records and South African records in the long course 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre butterfly, and the short course 100-metre freestyle. Formerly, he was a world record holder in the short course 100-metre butterfly and 200-metre butterfly.

Daiya Seto is a Japanese professional swimmer who specializes in individual medley, butterfly, breaststroke, and freestyle events. He holds the world record in the short course 400-metre individual medley and formerly held the world record in the short course 200-metre butterfly. Dylan Carter is a Trinidad and Tobago competitive swimmer. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he placed fourth in the 100 metre butterfly and thirteenth in the 100 metre freestyle. Sergey Geybel is a competitive Russian swimmer specializing in breaststroke events. He is a former world record holder in the 4×100-metre medley relay and the 4×50-metre medley relay. He won a gold medal at the 2008 World Short Course Championships as part of the world-record-setting finals relay team in the 4×100-metre medley relay. He also won two silver medals and one bronze medal over the course of his career in the 4×50-metre medley relay at the European Short Course Championships.
Trenton Jeffrey Julian is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and 4×100 meter medley relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2019 World University Games. He followed this win up with gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatic Championships, and 2022 World Short Course Championships. In the 4×100 meter medley relay, he won a world title and gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, swimming butterfly on each the prelims and finals relay.
