The 2011 International German Open was the 105th edition of the International German Open, a men's tennis tournament held that year in Hamburg, Germany. Part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the 2011 ATP World Tour, the games would last from 18 July through 24 July 2011. Andrey Golubev was the defending champion, but lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round.

Four-time defending champion Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in the final, 6–2, 7–5, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2008 US Open. It was his fifth consecutive US Open title and 13th major title overall, as well as his only successful title defense in majors that year. He moved to second place on the all time men's singles Grand Slam wins list, passing Roy Emerson.

Juan Martín del Potro defeated the five-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final, 3–6, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 7–6(7–4), 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2009 US Open. He became the first Argentine man to win the title since Guillermo Vilas in 1977, and the first to win a major since Gastón Gaudio in the 2004 French Open. This was del Potro's only major title, although he would reach a second final in 2018. This was also the first US Open final since 1999 to go to five sets.

Novak Djokovic defeated Mardy Fish in the final, 6–2, 3–6, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2011 Canadian Open. It was his 10th career Masters title, and he became the first man to win five Masters titles in the same year.
Andy Murray won the men's singles title at the 2011 Cincinnati Masters after Novak Djokovic retired from the final, with the scoreline at 6–4, 3–0. It was Murray's seventh Masters title. Djokovic's retirement in the final marked only his second defeat of the season.

It was his first US Open title, his third major of the year, and his fourth major title overall. Djokovic saved match points en route to the title, saving two against Roger Federer in the semifinals. This was the second consecutive US Open where Djokovic saved two match points against Federer to reach the final, and the fifth consecutive US Open where Djokovic and Federer played each other. With the loss, Federer failed to win a major in a calendar year for the first time since 2002.

Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in the final, 4–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. It was his seventh Wimbledon title and 17th major title overall. With the win, Federer also regained the world No. 1 ranking. Federer thus equalled both William Renshaw and Pete Sampras' all-time record of seven Wimbledon titles, as well as Sampras' record of 286 weeks as world No. 1.

It was his record-extending ninth French Open title and his 14th major title overall, tying Pete Sampras in second place for the most men's singles major titles in history. Nadal became the first man to win nine titles at the same major and the first man to win the French Open five consecutive times.
