Kimiko Date is a Japanese former professional tennis player. She reached the semifinals of the 1994 Australian Open, the 1995 French Open and the 1996 Wimbledon Championships, and won the Japan Open a record four times. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in 1995, and retired from professional tennis in November 1996.
Chuang Chia-jung and Lisa Raymond were the defending champions, but they decided to not compete this year.

The 2012 Blossom Cup was a professional tennis tournament played on hard courts. It was the third edition of the tournament which was part of the 2012 ITF Women's Circuit. It took place in Quanzhou, China between 3 and 8 January 2012. It offered the prize of US$50,000.

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won their second Grand Slam doubles title together, defeating Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2.
Peng Shuai and Zhang Shuai were the defending champions, however Peng chose not to participate. Zhang partnered with Chuang Chia-jung, but lost in the first round to Anastasia Rodionova and Vera Zvonareva.
