The 2013 CWHL Draft was held in August 2013. Jessica Wong became the first visible minority selected with the first pick overall. Wong was also part of another unique piece of draft history. Her teammate from the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, Katie Wilson, was picked second overall. It marked the first time that two NCAA teammates were selected first and second overall.

In addition, Blake Bolden became the first ever African American picked in the first round of said draft. Georgia Moore, a member of the Australian national women's team became the first Australian born player selected in the draft. Along with Julie Paetsch, both had experience competing in women's tackle football in the Western Women's Canadian Football League. Moore spent one season with the Okotoks Lady Outlaws, while Paetsch enjoyed multiple seasons with the Saskatoon Valkyries. It marked the first time that two WWCFL players were selected in the CWHL Draft. Of note, Delayne Brian was the first goaltender selected in the draft.

A draft is a process used in some countries and sports to allocate certain players to teams. In a draft, teams take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract, and no other team in the league may sign the player. The process is similar to round-robin item allocation.

The NBA draft is the National Basketball Association's (NBA) annual event, dating back to 1947, in which the teams in the league can draft players who declare for the draft and that are eligible to join their organization. The current NBA consists of 30 teams, and all thirty teams have at least one draft pick throughout the two draft rounds. Historically, the vast majority of players drafted into the NBA are college basketball players.

The 1986 VFL draft was the third formal draft to provide recruitment opportunities to clubs participating in Australian rules football's elite Victorian Football League. Held on 26 November 1986 after the end of the 1986 VFL season, it consisted only of the national draft itself, without a subsequent rookie or pre-season draft. It was the first draft to be held since two initial drafts in 1981 and 1982, and as drafts have been held every year since, it is considered to be the first of the modern drafts.

Mark Austin is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club and Western Bulldogs in the Australian Football League (AFL). Austin played two senior games for the Glenelg Tigers in the 2006 South Australian National Football League (SANFL) season, and was subsequently selected in the 2006 AFL National Draft in the third round by Carlton, who also selected school friend and Glenelg teammate Bryce Gibbs in the same draft.

The 1966 American Football League draft was held on Saturday, November 27, 1965. The AFL added the Miami Dolphins as an expansion team in 1966 to bring its total to nine franchises for its seventh season. The Dolphins were awarded the first overall pick in the draft, who used it to select running back Jim Grabowski. The only Hall of Famer to come out of this draft was kicker Jan Stenerud, who was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the Red Shirt portion of the draft.

The 1987 Major League Baseball draft is the process by which Major League Baseball (MLB) teams select athletes to play for their organization. High school seniors, college juniors and seniors, and anyone who had never played under a professional contract were considered eligible for the draft. The 1987 MLB Draft took place as a conference call to the Commissioner of Baseball's office in New York from June 2–4. As opposed to the National Football League Draft which appeared on ESPN, no network aired the MLB Draft.

The Calgary Inferno was a women's ice hockey team that joined the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) for the 2011–12 season. The team played its home games at Joan Snyder Rink at WinSport Canada in Calgary, Alberta. After two seasons without an official name, in 2013 the team picked a moniker drawing from Calgary's National Hockey League franchise, the Calgary Flames, with whom they had a partnership. For the 2013-14 season, it was announced that all Inferno home-games would be streamed live by PCSN.tv.

Jessica Wong, also known by the Chinese name Wang Yuting, is a Canadian ice hockey player, a defenceman. She most recently played with the Chinese national ice hockey team and in the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) with the KRS Vanke Rays during the 2021–22 season. She was drafted first overall in the 2013 CWHL Draft by the Calgary Inferno and played four seasons in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL).

Lauren Kate Barnes is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender for Seattle Reign FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She previously played for the Philadelphia Independence in the WPS and represented the United States on the under-15, under-20, and under-23 national teams. As of the end of the 2023 season, she has played the most-ever games and minutes of any NWSL player.

Julie Paetsch is an athlete from Lanigan, Saskatchewan. Currently, she is a two-sport athlete in hockey and football. Selected by the Calgary Inferno in the 2013 CWHL Draft, she is also a competitor for the Saskatoon Valkyries of the Western Women's Canadian Football League.

The 2013–14 CWHL season was the seventh in league history. The Montreal Stars finished as regular season champions while the top four leading scorers in the regular season are all Stars players . The Toronto Furies won the 2014 Clarkson Cup, making them the first team to finish in fourth place during the regular season to claim the Cup. The Calgary Inferno also qualified for their first-ever postseason berth while goaltender DeLayne Brian became the first Inferno goaltender with a winning record in the regular season.

The 1st Canadian Women's Hockey League All-Star Game, took place on December 13, 2014 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Admission was free, and 6,850 people attended the game. The game aired live on Sportsnet One in Canada, as well as on the NHL Network in the United States. The event featured three 15-minute periods which aired on television, and had a Skills Competition following the game.

The 2015–16 CWHL season is the ninth season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL).

The 2016 draft for the Canadian Women's Hockey League took place on August 21, 2016. Players must register before midnight on August 1, 2016, and pay an entry fee of CDN $150.

The 3rd Canadian Women's Hockey League All-Star Game took place on February 12, 2017, at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event featured three 20-minute periods, and 34 players were named as participants Jess Jones and Jillian Saulnier both scored a hat trick, becoming the first competitors in CWHL All-Star Game history to achieve the feat.

Jessica Jones is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for PWHL Toronto of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). Jones was a member of the Canadian national under-18 team that competed at the inaugural IIHF Women's U18 World Championships in 2008. She was selected to compete in the 2017 CWHL All-Star Game, the third All-Star Game in her Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) career.

Katia Clement-Heydra is a Canadian-born women's ice hockey player, whose final season of professional hockey saw her skate for Modo Hockey in the SDHL.

The 2017–18 CWHL season is the 11th season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. This is also the first season in which the teams pay their players a salary. It would also prove to be the final full season in which Brenda Andress served as commissioner of the league, tendering her resignation on July 18, 2019.
