The 2014 Malaysian sedition dragnet is an ongoing campaign by the government of Malaysia where several citizens were arrested and charged for allegedly making seditious statements in contravention of Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948. The term "sedition dragnet" is widely used by the Malaysian media to describe the campaign. [1] [2] [3]
The Sedition Act is considered by opposition politicians and activists to be an outdated draconian law introduced by the British colonial government which aims to stifle freedom of expression. [4] [5] Government officials however consider the Sedition Act as necessary to maintain peace in the country. [6]
Another controversial piece of legislation, the Internal Security Act (ISA), was repealed in 2012 by the Najib Razak administration and replaced with the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 following mounting criticism of the ISA, another colonial era law which had allowed for preventive detention and extrajudicial detention. [7]
Activists and politicians have complained that the dragnet was carried out despite prime minister Najib's earlier promises to repeal the Sedition Act. [5] [8]
Among the people arrested were opposition politicians Khalid Abdul Samad, N. Surendran and Teresa Kok while among non-politicians who were arrested were Universiti Malaya law professor, Azmi Sharom and Malaysiakini journalist Susan Loone as well as other political activists. [9] Muhammad Safwan Anang who was convicted under the Sedition Act on 5 September 2014 [10] was charged earlier in 2013 together with PKR's Tian Chua, PAS' Tamrin Ghafar Baba, student activist Adam Adli and social activists Harris Ibrahim and Hishamuddin Rais in relation to their role in allegedly inciting the people to change government through illegal means and is arguably not part of this sedition dragnet. [11] All persons listed below were arrested or charged under the Sedition Act unless specified otherwise.

Former Perak chief minister Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin was charged for criminal defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code in August 2014 for a statement made in a speech in 2012 about prime minister Najib Razak. [24] Meanwhile, PKR Vice President Rafizi Ramli was charged for provocation of breach of peace under Section 504 of the Penal Code.
Teresa Kok Suh Sim is a Malaysian politician who served as the Minister of Primary Industries in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. She has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Seputeh since November 1999. She also served as the Selangor State Executive Councillor and Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kinrara from March 2008 to May 2013. She is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the PH opposition coalition.
Khairy Jamaluddin, commonly known as KJ, is a Malaysian politician who has served as Minister of Health in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob since August 2021 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Rembau since March 2008. He served as the Coordinating Minister of the COVID-19 National Immunisation Programme (PICK) from February 2021 to August 2021 and Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation from March 2020 to August 2021 in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. He came to prominence as the minister-in-charge of PICK which is one of the most important and significant efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. He also served as the Minister of Youth and Sports from May 2013 to May 2018. A member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He also served as the Youth Chief of UMNO from March 2009 to June 2018.
The Internal Security Act 1960 was a preventive detention law in force in Malaysia. The legislation was enacted after the Federation of Malaya gained independence from Britain in 1957. The ISA allows for detention without trial or criminal charges under limited, legally defined circumstances. On 15 September 2011, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak said that this legislation will be repealed and replaced by two new laws. The ISA was replaced and repealed by the Security Offences Act 2012 which has been passed by Parliament and given the royal assent on 18 June 2012. The Act came into force on 31 July 2012.
Tan Sri Zainuddin bin Maidin was a Malaysian politician and the former Information Minister in the Malaysian cabinet representing United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government. He was the member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Merbok constituency for one term, from 24 March 2004 to 8 March 2008. He is also the former Chief Editor of Utusan Melayu-turned-fierce critic, the oldest Malay language newspaper in Malaysia.
Dato' Seri Ir. Mohammad Nizar bin Jamaluddin is a Malaysian politician who served as the 10th Menteri Besar of Perak from March 2008 until the collapse of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state administration in February 2009. From 2009 to 2013 he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bukit Gantang. From May 2018 until the collapse of the PH state administration in March 2020, he served as a member of the Perak State Executive Council (EXCO) in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administration under former Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu. Since May 2018, he has also served as Member of the Perak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Sungai Rapat. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the PH federal and opposition coalition and was a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a former component party of the former state ruling PR coalition before being unseated in the 2009 constitutional crisis.
Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, is a Malaysian politician who served as Special Advisor to the Minister of Works from March 2019 to February 2020 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Batu from March 2008 to May 2018. He is a member of the People'e Justice Party (PKR), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. He served as Vice-President of PKR from November 2010 to May 2022 and Information Chief of PKR from April 2004 to March 2008.
The Pakatan Rakyat or PR was an informal Malaysian political coalition and successor to Barisan Alternatif (BA). The political coalition was formed by the People's Justice Party (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) on 1 April 2008, after the 12th Malaysian general election, having previously formed the Barisan Alternatif in the 10th general election. On 20 April 2010, the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) officially joined as a member of the Pakatan Rakyat after being expelled from Barisan Nasional, but quit the coalition on 6 May 2011. The DAP declared the coalition "dead" on 16 June 2015, citing the inability of the rest of the alliance to work with PAS, after PAS's congress passed the motion to sever ties with DAP without debate. It was succeeded by Pakatan Harapan and Gagasan Sejahtera.
Khalid bin Abdul Samad is a Malaysian politician who served as the Minister of Federal Territories in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Shah Alam since March 2008. He is a member and Communications Director of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the PH opposition coalition and was a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a former component party of the former Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Barisan Alternatif (BA) opposition coalitions.
Dato' Sri Haji Tajuddin bin Abdul Rahman is a Malaysian politician. He has also been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Salak since March 2008 and the former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry from May 2013 to May 2018 under former Prime Minister Najib Razak. He is a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a major component party in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi is a Malaysian politician who has served as the 8th President of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the 6th Chairman of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which is aligned with another ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, since June 2018. He served his first term in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He also served as the Minister of Communications and Multimedia in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin from March 2020 to August 2021 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Indera Mahkota since May 2018. The 2018 Malaysian general election, formally known as the 14th Malaysian general election, was held on Wednesday, 9 May 2018, for members of the 14th Parliament of Malaysia. At stake were all 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat and 505 seats in 12 out of the 13 state legislative assemblies of Malaysia. The 13th Parliament of Malaysia was dissolved by Prime Minister Najib Razak on 7 April 2018. It would have been automatically dissolved on 24 June 2018, five years after the first meeting of the first session of the 13th Parliament of Malaysia on 24 June 2013.

He was the Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Padang Serai constituency in the state of Kedah for one term from 2013 to 2018. The 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis is an ongoing political crisis in Malaysia. It has been caused by Members of Parliament (MPs) changing party support, leading to the loss of parliamentary majority, the collapse of two successive coalition governments and resignation of two Prime Ministers in less than 18 months. In February 2020, developments commonly nicknamed the Sheraton Move saw the ousting of the elected Pakatan Harapan government and the resignation of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, after 22 months in power. They were replaced with the Perikatan Nasional government under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Political instability continued after this change throughout 2020 and into 2021, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This culminated in the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet in August 2021 after 17 months in power. Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed Prime Minister a few days later.
