General elections were held in Azad Kashmir on 21 July 2016 to elect 41 members of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Polling started at 8:00am and continued until 5:00pm.
At least 423 candidates ran for the 41 seats, the main competition being between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (AJKMC) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). 5,427 polling stations were set up for the election [1]
2,674,586 people were registered to vote in the elections, of whom 1,190,839 were female and 1,483,747 male. [1]
The PML-N won 31, the PPP three, and PTI two. In addition, the AJKMC won three seats, the Jammu Kashmir Peoples Party (JKPP) won one seat and one seat was won by an independent. After the election, the PML(N) was able to elect its members to three seats reserved for women, one for ulema, and one for overseas. On the other hand, the PPP was able to win one reserved seat for women. Due to a pre-election agreement with the PML(N), the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) was also able to get one of its members elected to a reserved seat for women and another to a reserved seat for technocrats. Following these results, the PML(N) was able to form a comfortable majority government, electing Raja Farooq Haider as prime minister of Azad Kashmir, controlling 36 out of the 49 seats in the assembly, while also enjoying support from the two JI MLAs. His opponents, Chaudhry Yasin of the PPP and Ghulam Mohiuddin Dewan of the PTI, each garnered five votes each. [3] [4]
Chakswari, also known as Chaksawari, is an area in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It comprises 15 Union councils including the Islamgarh Municipal Committee. Amongst the primary affectees of the Mangla Dam upraising project were Chakswari and Islamgarh. Chakswari is 26 miles or 41.84 km from Mirpur. The political constituency code for Chakswari and Islamgarh is LA-2.
Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is an Azad Kashmiri politician who hails from Mirpur. He served as Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir between July 1996 to July 2001 and is currently serving as the President of Azad Kashmir since 25 August 2021.
Abdur Rasheed Turabi is a well-known politician of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He was the Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Kashmir till July 2017. Dr Khalid Mahmood is his successor and newly elected Ameer of JI AJK. He is a well known columnist and also has written books giving the guidelines of solution of Kashmir dispute. He remained President of Islami-e-Jamiat Talaba Kashmir Chapter (1974–76). He participated greatly in the freedom movement of Kashmir. He is member of Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He is also member of Muslim World league.
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was an Azad Kashmiri politician who served as the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir for two non-consecutives terms. He also served as the President of Azad Kashmir twice. He was the longest-serving prime minister of Azad Kashmir, having served a total of more than 10 years across two tenures.
Raja Farooq Haider Khan is an Azad Kashmiri politician and former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He is a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League (N).
Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan is an Azad Kashmiri businessman and politician. He served as the President of Azad Kashmir from 25 August 2011 to 25 August 2016. He also served as the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir from 7 January 2009 to 22 October 2009. Beside politics, Khan is also serving as the Chairman of YK Group of Companies.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Council has been established as per Article 33 of Gilgit-Baltistan Order, 2009. Its Chairman is the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan is the Vice-Chairman over the six members-elected. It can legislate on 53 subjects as provided in Schedule III of the Order.
Sahibzada Muhammad Ishaq Zaffar also known as Ishaq Zaffar (1945–2006) was a Pakistani politician in Azad Kashmir administrative territory. He filled various positions in the Azad Kashmir government from the 1970s until dying in office in 2006, beginning as a member of the Pakistan People's Party, serving as member of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Speaker of the Assembly, Acting President of Azad Kashmir, and senior minister, and was opposition leader in the constituent assembly at the time of his death. He contested elections for constituent assembly of Azad Kashmir for five times and always won assembly seat.
Riffat Aziz is a Pakistani-Kashmiri politician who was a member of Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2021. Riffat Aziz belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami Azad Jammu & Kashmir and was elected in 2016's elections as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Azad Kashmir on a reserved seat for women from Kotli, Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

LA-39 Jammu and Others-VI is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Raja Muhammad Siddique of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). It covers the area of Rawalpindi Division, Islamabad Capital Territory, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Only refugees from Jammu and Ladakh settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.

Local government elections were held in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on 27 November, 3 December 2022 and 8 December 2022 in three phases. These local government elections were the first ones in more than three decades. The results were declared for each of the three phases on their respective voting days. He has been a member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly since June 2023. He was elected in a by-election on 8 June 2023 from LA-15 Bagh-II, securing 25,755 votes. He succeeded the former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who was disqualified by the High Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for contempt of court.
