General elections were held in Azad Kashmir on 25 July 2021 after the expiry of the 5-year term of the previous Legislative Assembly. [1] The elections were held in 33 constituencies of Azad Kashmir and 12 constituencies of the refugees of Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan. [2]
By an early estimate, over 2.82 million people of Azad Kashmir were registered to vote; of which 1.59 million were male voters, while 1.30 million were female voters. [3] By the time of the election, the number of registered voters had increased to 3,220,793. [4]
A total of 724 candidates stood for 45 general seats this year. 579 candidates competed for the 33 constituencies within Azad Kashmir, while the remaining 145 competed for the 12 refugee constituencies in Pakistan. [5]
In current elections The PTI won 26, the PPP 11 and PML N 6. In addition, AJ&K MC won 1 seats, JK PPP 1 seat.
Following these results, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf was able to form a comfortable majority government, controlling 26 general seats and 6 reserved/technocrat seats, giving them 32 out of the 53 seats in the assembly.
4 new seats were added in Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Muzaffarabad, Neelum, Sudhanoti/Poonch and Kotli districts gained an additional seats each, hence, the number of members in the Assembly of Azad Kashmir was elevated from 49 to 53. Therefore the new amount of seats needed for a majority became 27. [6] [7]

The polls were open across Azad Kashmir and Pakistan from 8:00 to 17:00 PST. The results of started to pour in after poll closings in the evening. The below table shows election results by political party. [8]

Chaudhry Muhammad Akbar Ibrahim
Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is an Azad Kashmiri politician who hails from Mirpur. He served as Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir between July 1996 to July 2001 and is currently serving as the President of Azad Kashmir since 25 August 2021.
Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan is an Azad Kashmiri politician and former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He is a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League (N).
General elections were held in Azad Kashmir on 21 July 2016 to elect 41 members of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Polling started at 8:00am and continued until 5:00pm.

LA-35 Jammu and Others-II is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Maqbool Ahmed Gujjar of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It covers the area of Hafizabad District, Gujranwala District, and Sialkot District. Only refugees from Jammu and Ladakh settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.
LA-36 Jammu and Others-III is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Hafiz Hamid Raza of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It covers the area of Sialkot Tehsil in Sialkot District. Only refuges from Jammu and Ladakh settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.

LA-39 Jammu and Others-VI is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Raja Muhammad Siddique of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). It covers the area of Rawalpindi Division, Islamabad Capital Territory, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Only refugees from Jammu and Ladakh settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.
LA-37 Jammu - 4 (Narowal) is a constituency of Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Muhammad Akmal Sargala of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. It covers the area of Narowal District in Pakistan. Only refugees from Jammu and Ladakh Settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote.
LA-45 Kashmir Valley-VI is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Abdul Majid Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It covers the area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Only refugees from the Kashmir Valley settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.
LA-44 Kashmir Valley-V is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Muhammad Ahmad Raza Qadri of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). It covers the area of Attock District, Rawalpindi District, and the Islamabad Capital Territory. Only refugees from the Kashmir Valley settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.
LA-43 Kashmir Valley-IV is a constituency of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly which is currently represented by Javed Butt of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It covers the area of the city of Rawalpindi. Only refugees from the Kashmir Valley settled in Pakistan are eligible to vote in this constituency.
Sardar Muahmmad Tanveer Ilyas Khan is a Pakistani businessman-turned-politician who was the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from April 2022 to April 2023, and was the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Azad Kashmir from September 2021 to April 2023.
Local government elections were held in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on 27 November, 3 December 2022 and 8 December 2022 in three phases. These local government elections were the first ones in more than three decades. The results were declared for each of the three phases on their respective voting days. The elections will be held under the supervision of Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq is a Pakistani politician from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). He is the current and 15th Prime Minister of AJK since April 2023, succeeding Sardar Tanveer Ilyas.
Sardar Ziaul Qamar is a politician from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He has been a member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly since June 2023. He was elected in a by-election on 8 June 2023 from LA-15 Bagh-II, securing 25,755 votes. He succeeded the former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who was disqualified by the High Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for contempt of court.
Kausar Taqdees Gillani is an Azad Kasmir politician, who is a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). She was elected to the 10th Legislative Assembly of Azad Kashmir on 25 July 2021, taking one of the assembly seats reserved for women. Two other women members of PTI were also elected: Begum Imtiaz Naseem and Sabiha Khatoon. On 23 November 2023 Gillani was sworn in as Minister for Azad Kashmir Small industries Co-operation,Travel and Trade Authority. She is a former chair of the Pakistan Business Forum's Azad Jammu Kashmir Chapter.
