The 2016 Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team represented the University of Cincinnati during the 2016 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Bearcats played their home games at Marge Schott Stadium as a member of the American Athletic Conference. They were led by head coach Ty Neal, in his third season at Cincinnati. The UC Baseball team was the youngest team in the nation in 2015. The 2016 team featured 29 underclassmen (14 freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, 12 sophomores and one redshirt sophomore) to just six upperclassmen (two juniors, one redshirt junior and three seniors).

Contents

On March 21, 2016 Cincinnati defeated Northwestern 10–3 for the 8th straight win, also the 200th win at Marge Schott Stadium. The 8–0 record at home was the best start for any UC team at home since going a perfect 10–0 at home in 1961. Cincinnati finished the home schedule with an 18–7 record, the best winning percentage in the history of Marge Schott Stadium

Previous season

In 2015, the Bearcats finished 8th in the American with a record of 15-41, 6–18 in conference play. They failed to qualify for the 2015 NCAA Division I baseball tournament. Ian Happ was drafted ninth overall by the Chicago Cubs. Happ was named first team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), he was previously named First Team All-America by D1Baseball.com and was added to the second team by Baseball America, the NCBWA, Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball and College Sports Madness. He also was named a First Team Capital One Academic All-American by CoSIDA, along with AAC Player of the year [2]

Ian Edward Happ is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Cubs selected Happ in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft, and he made his MLB debut in 2017. Happ was an All-Star in 2022 and won a Gold Glove Award in 2022 and 2023.

The team returned on campus to Nippert Stadium after playing 2014 home games at Paul Brown Stadium during stadium renovation. The 2015–16 Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball team represented the University of Cincinnati during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bearcats, were led by tenth year head coach Mick Cronin, who returned full-time after taking a hiatus in December 2014. The Bearcats played their home games on Ed Jucker Court at Fifth Third Arena and were members of the American Athletic Conference. They finished the season with a record of 22–11, 12–6 in AAC play to finish in a tie for third place in conference. The Bearcats lost in the quarterfinals of the AAC tournament to UConn for the second consecutive year. They received an at-large bid as a #9 seed to the NCAA tournament. They lost in the First Round of the Tournament to Saint Joseph's.

Eric Rigoberto Gutierrez is an American college baseball coach and former professional baseball first basemen. He is the volunteer assistant coach at Texas Tech University. He played college baseball at Texas Tech University from 2013 to 2016. He was drafted in the 20th round by the Miami Marlins in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, where he would play in their organization until 2018.

The 2016–17 Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball team represented the University of Cincinnati in the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team played its home games at Fifth Third Arena, with a capacity of 13,176. The season marked the final year prior to major renovations to Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats were led by 11th-year head coach Mick Cronin and were members of the American Athletic Conference. They finished the season 30–6, 16–2 to finish in second place in AAC play. They beat Tulsa and UConn in the AAC tournament before losing to SMU in the championship game. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 6 seed in the South region. They defeated No. 11-seeded Kansas State in the first round before losing to No. 3-seeded UCLA in the second round.

The Cincinnati–Louisville rivalry is a college sports rivalry between the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and the University of Louisville Cardinals. The rivalry between these two schools, located about 100 miles (160 km) apart, dates to their first men's college basketball game in 1921, and has continued across all sports, with the football series gaining attention as well, having started in 1929. Both universities share common characteristics, both being over 200 year old institutions in urban settings. The schools have also shared conferences historically, with the rivalry stretching over the span of four conferences from the Missouri Valley Conference, to the Metro Conference to Conference USA, and more recently in the Big East Conference, which in 2013 was renamed to the American Athletic Conference. After the 2013–14 season, Louisville joined the Atlantic Coast Conference and since then the rivalry has been put on hiatus in football and basketball. Cincinnati will officially join the Big 12 conference in 2023. However, many other sports at the universities, such as baseball, continue to battle periodically.

The 2022 Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team represented the University of Southern Mississippi in the sport of baseball for the 2021 college baseball season. The Golden Eagles competed in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and in Conference USA. They played their home games at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The team was coached by Scott Berry, who was in his thirteenth season with the Golden Eagles. This was Southern Miss' last season to compete as a member of the C-USA as they moved on to the Sun Belt Conference following the conclusion of the season.

The 2022 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs baseball team represented Louisiana Tech University in the sport of baseball for the 2022 college baseball season. The Bulldogs competed in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and in Conference USA West Division. They played their home games at J. C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, on the university's Ruston campus. The team was coached by Lane Burroughs, who was in his sixth season with the Bulldogs.
