Mladenovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Xu Yifan were also in contention for the top ranking at the start of the tournament.

This was Mertens and Sabalenka's second Grand Slam doubles title as a team after they first won the 2019 US Open. By virtue of winning the title, Sabalenka claimed the world No. 1 doubles ranking.
Petra Kvitová won her second title at the Qatar Open, defeating Garbiñe Muguruza in the singles final, 6–2, 6–1, in a rematch of the 2018 final. Kvitová dropped just one set the entire tournament, to Anett Kontaveit in the quarterfinals.
World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 3–6, 6–0, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 edition of the Stuttgart Open.
