The 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election was held on 28 September, 2016 to determine the Governor of Edo State. The election was originally scheduled for 10 September, however two days before, on 8 September it was postponed due to security concerns. [1] [2]

Contents

The incumbent governor, Adams Oshiomhole, was ineligible to run for a third consecutive term due to term limits established in the Fifth Amendment to the Nigeria Constitution. [3] He was succeeded by Godwin Obaseki, who defeated PDP candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the election.

Electoral system

The Governor of Edo State is elected using the plurality voting system.

PDP primary

In the PDP primary election held on 20 June 2016, Osagie Ize-Iyamu polled a total of 584 votes to defeat Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, his closest rival, who had 91 votes while Solomon Edebiri scored 38 votes. [4]

APC primary

Godwin Obaseki, chairman of the Edo State Economy and Strategy Team, emerged victorious in the APC primary, winning 1,618 votes against 11 other candidates. His closest rival was Pius Odubu, the state deputy governor, who came a distant second with 471 votes. The total number of invalid votes was 41. The only female candidate in the primary, Tina Agbarha, came last with just three votes. [5]

General Election

A total of 19 candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission. APC candidate Obaseki won the election with 52% of the vote to PDP candidate Ize-Iyamu's 41%.

The total number of registered voters in the state was 1,900,233 while 622,039 voters were accredited. Voter turnout was 613,244 and the difference in total votes won between the two major candidates was 66,310. [6]

Ize-Iyamu was the National Vice-Chairman, South-South Zone, of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Godwin Obaseki is a Nigerian politician and businessman who has served as the Governor of Edo State since 2016. A member of the Peoples Democratic Party since 2020, Obaseki won the election in 2016 under the All Progressives Congress against Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and was sworn in on 12 November 2016.

John Yakubu is a former chairman of Esan North-East local government area. He was the running mate of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the People's Democratic Party nominee in the 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election.

Philip Shaibu is a Nigerian accountant and politician who has served as the deputy governor of Edo State since 2016. He was impeached in 2024 but was reinstated by the Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday, 17 July 2024. He previously served as a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Etsako from 2015 to 2016, and as a member of the Edo State House of Assembly from 2007 to 2015.

Patrick Obahiagbon is a Nigerian politician and legal practitioner. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007, and served Oredo until his appointment as chief of staff to Governor Adams Oshiomole in 2011. Obahiagbon established a cult-following among many Nigerians for his grammatical caricature when engaged in social and political commentary.

The 2020 Edo State gubernatorial election occurred on September 19, 2020. Incumbent PDP Governor Godwin Obaseki won re-election for a second term, defeating APC Osagie Ize-Iyamu and several minor party candidates. Obaseki received 57.3% of the vote.

The 2020 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 19 September 2020, in Edo State, and 10 October 2020, in Ondo State. The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2016. The All Progressives Congress' Rotimi Akeredolu was defending the Governor's office of Ondo while APC-turned-PDP Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was defending his office. Both won reelection, leading to no net change in terms of overall party control of governorships.

Gideon Obhakhan is a Nigerian politician and the immediate past commissioner for education in Edo State. He contested for the House of Representatives during the 2015 general election.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Edo State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Edo State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

Matthew Aigbuhenze Iduoriyekemwen is a Nigerian politician, businessman and former commissioner representing Edo State in the NDDC. He was the member representing Ikpoba Okha LGA in the Edo State House of Assembly between 1999 and 2007. He is currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election took place on Saturday, 21 September 2024, to elect the governor of Edo State. The incumbent PDP governor, Godwin Obaseki, was ineligible to contest for re-election, having already served two terms as allowed by the constitution of Nigeria.
