It was the 24th edition of the Ladies Championship Gstaad, and part of the International category of the 2016 WTA Tour. It took place at Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland, from 11 July through 17 July 2016.

Caroline Wozniacki defeated Anastasija Sevastova in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 China Open. It was Wozniacki's 30th and last WTA Tour title, before her first retirement in January 2020.
Bianca Andreescu defeated Angelique Kerber in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2019 Indian Wells Open. It was her first WTA Tour title, and she became the first wildcard champion in tournament history, as well as the youngest champion since Serena Williams in 1999. This marked the second consecutive year where a player won the tournament as her first WTA singles title.
