The Liverpool City Region Labour Party mayoral selection of 2016 was the process by which the Labour Party selected its candidate for Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, to stand in the mayoral election on 4 May 2017.

Contents

Voting ending on Friday 5 August 2016, with the result to be announced on Wednesday 10 August. [1] [2] Steve Rotheram had called for the voting deadline to be extended until Friday 12 August after delays in issuing ballot papers, [3] but in the event, on 10 August Rotheram was declared the winning candidate.

    The results of the selection were announced on 10 August 2016. Turnout was 72%, with 4,955 votes cast, and 83 invalid votes. [12]

    Wendy Simon is a Labour Party politician who exercised the powers and duties of the office of Mayor of Liverpool from 2020 to 2021. Mayor Joe Anderson temporarily stepped aside in December 2020. Although Anderson formally remained as Mayor until the end of his term, Simon performed Anderson’s duties. She also served as Deputy Mayor of Liverpool from 2018 to 2021.

    The 2024 Liverpool City Region mayoral election is due to be held on 2 May 2024 to elect the mayor of the Liverpool City Region. The election will take place the same day as council elections across England and Wales.
