The 2016 Sudan Premier League is the 45th season of top-tier football in Sudan. The season began in January 2016. Al-Merrikh SC are the defending champions, having won their 16th championship.
The league comprises 18 teams, the bottom three of which will be relegated to regional leagues for 2017.

Al-Merrikh Sporting Club is a Sudanese football club based in Omdurman. Their home stadium is Al-Merrikh Stadium, which is locally known as The Red Castle. Founded in 1908, Al-Merrikh is one of the oldest football clubs in Africa, and have won the Sudan Premier League 16 times and Sudan Cup 14 times. The club share a fierce rivalry with Al-Hilal, the games between them regularly selling out, as well as being the only other realistic challenger to the league crown. Al-Hilal are also based in Omdurman with only Al-Ardha street separating the teams and between them they are Sudan's most powerful and successful football clubs.
Al-Merrikh Stadium, also known as the Red Castle, is a multi-use stadium in Omdurman, Sudan, used mostly for football matches and also sometimes for athletics. Established in 1962. The stadium is used mostly for football games and is considered the home stadium of both Al-Merrikh SC and the Sudan national team. Currently, the stadium has a capacity of 43,000. In the 2016 CAF Champions League season, Al-Merrikh drew an average home attendance of 17,250. They usually draw much lower crowds for their domestic league games.
Haytham Tambal is a former Sudanese football striker. He is the all-time Sudan national football team top scorer. In 2008 in the Sudanese league he scored 21 goals in 20 games. He used to play rivals Al-Hilal Club and Al-Merrikh SC and made a single appearance for South African club, Orlando Pirates.
The Khartoum League began in 1952 and was a famous historical regional championship in Sudan. The teams playing in it were those from the three cities of the capital Khartoum; Khartoum, Bahri, and Omdurman.
Demba Barry is a Malian footballer. He currently plays as a defender for the Algerian Championnat National club ES Sétif. He scored his first goal for Al-Hilal in a match which Al-Hilal beat Al-Ahli, Wad Medani 2–1 and in the CAF Champions League he scored against Al-Merreikh SC in a match which finished 3–1. He scored 2 goals against El-Merriekh in the last 6 meetings between them
The 2009 Sudan Premier League is the 38th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on 18 February 2009 with a 1–1 draw between Al-Mourada and Merghani Kassala. For the 2009 season, the number of teams has been expanded from 12 to 13 teams. Al-Merreikh are the defending champions.
The 2010 Sudan Premier League was the 39th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on 2010-02-20. For the 2010 season, the number of teams has been expanded from 13 to 14 teams. Al-Hilal Omdurman are the defending champions.

Mohamed Ahmed Bashir, also known as Muhamed Besha, is a Sudanese footballer who plays for the Sudanese club Al-hilal Omdurman. He plays as a striker and also a winger. He is a member of the Sudan national football team. He was brought from Al-Mourada SC to Al-Hilal in December 2010. After having a good season with Al-Hilal in 2011, he was linked with Leyton Orient and Arsenal. He scored Sudan's first goal in 36 years in the 2012 African Cup Of Nations against Angola in the group B, which ended in a 2–2. He was transferred to the Saudi club Al-Wehda in June 2012. He scored his first goal for Al-Wehda against Al-Ahli in a friendly match, which Al-Wehda won 0–4. Bisha later scored his first league competitive goal for his new side with a shot against the Saudi League champions Al-Shabab, but the team lost 2–5. He has been a fan favourite in Makkah and in Sudan as he scored his national team since playing his trade in Saudi Arabia against Ethiopia, which Sudan won 5–3 in a qualifier match for the 2013 AFCON held in South Africa.
Akram El Hadi Saleem is a Sudanese international footballer who plays for Toti SC, as a goalkeeper. He was the starting goalkeeper for the Sudan team at the 2012 African Cup of Nations and took part in 3 matches.
