At 35 years, 4 months and 2 days, Serena became the oldest woman to win the major surpassing Martina Navratilova in the 1990 Wimbledon Championships. With the win, Serena also regained the world No. 1 singles ranking. Serena was roughly 8-weeks pregnant with her first daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., by the end of the tournament. It was Venus' first major final since the 2009 Wimbledon Championships.

Elitsa Kostova was the defending champion from the event's previous edition as an ITF Women's Circuit tournament, but lost in the first round of qualifying to Barbora Štefková.

Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final, 6–7(6–8), 7–5, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Indian Wells Masters.

She became the first Dutchwoman to win the title.

Bianca Andreescu defeated Angelique Kerber in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2019 Indian Wells Open. It was her first WTA Tour title, and Andreescu became the first wildcard champion in the tournament's history, as well as the youngest champion since Serena Williams in 1999. This marked the second consecutive year where a player won the tournament as her first WTA Tour singles title.

Romina Oprandi was the defending champion, having won the last edition in 2012 as an ITF tournament, but chose not to participate.

The 2021 US Open – Women's Singles Qualifying was a series of tennis matches from 24 August 2021 to 27 August 2021 where 128 players competed to determine the 16 qualifiers into the main draw of the 2021 US Open women's singles tournament, and, if necessary, the lucky losers. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, the qualifying matches were not open to the public.
