Bencic defeated six major finalists in succession en route to her first WTA Tour title. At 18 years and 23 weeks of age, Bencic became the youngest woman to win the tournament, surpassing Ana Ivanovic's record from 2006.

The event is part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the 2017 ATP World Tour, and of the WTA International tournaments of the 2017 WTA Tour. It took place at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C., United States, from July 31 to August 6, 2017.

Timofeeva won the title both as a lucky loser and in her first main-draw appearance on the WTA Tour. She thus became the first lucky loser to win a WTA Tour singles title since Coco Gauff in 2019, and the first player to win a title on her tour debut since Angelique Widjaja in 2001.
Tamara Korpatsch defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 2023 Transylvania Open. It was her first WTA Tour title.
