The 2017 Coates Hire Supercars Challenge was a motor racing event for Supercars Championship, held on the weekend of 23 to 26 March 2017. The event was held at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, and consisted of four races of 70 kilometres in length. It was a non-championship event, contested by teams taking part in the 2017 Supercars Championship, and was held in support of the 2017 Australian Grand Prix. [1] The event will be the 32nd and final running of the Supercars Challenge, and the last before the event attained championship status for 2018 known as the Melbourne 400. [2]

Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit motorsport track in Australia

The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit is a street circuit around Albert Park Lake, only a few kilometres south of central Melbourne. It is used annually as a racetrack for the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, Supercars Championship Melbourne 400 and associated support races. The circuit has FIA Grade 1 licence. In spite of being a circuit on public roads it has characteristics of a natural road course considering it being fast and flowing combined with extensive runoff in many corners.

Background

A new 'rapid-fire' qualifying system was introduced to the event for the 2017 season, with 4 ten minute qualifying sessions held back to back on Thursday afternoon. [3] Taz Douglas was also confirmed to drive again for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport shortly before the event, after originally only accepting an offer for the previous round, the Clipsal 500. [4]

Taz Douglas is a part-time Australian race driver. Douglas came 2nd at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 with James Moffat in 2014

The event was held at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne, Victoria, and consisted of one race, scheduled for 499.744 kilometres in length, it was shortened to 388 kilometres in length because of a time limit imposed by Supercars. It was the tenth event of fourteen in the 2017 Supercars Championship and hosted Race 19 of the season. It was also the first event of the 2017 Enduro Cup.

The 2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was a motor racing event for the Supercars Championship, held on the weekend of 5 to 8 October 2017. The event was held at the Mount Panorama Circuit near Bathurst, New South Wales, and consisted of a 1000 kilometre race. It was the eleventh event of fourteen in the 2017 Supercars Championship and was Race 20 of the season. It was also the second event of the 2017 Enduro Cup.

The Melbourne 400 is an annual motor racing event for Supercars, held at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria since 2018. The 2018 Melbourne 400 was a motor racing event for the Supercars Championship that was held on the weekend of 22 to 25 March 2018. The event was run at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, and marked the first running of the Melbourne 400. It was the second event of sixteen in the 2018 Supercars Championship and consisted of two races of 130 kilometres, and two races of 70 kilometers. The races were run in support of the 2018 Australian Grand Prix and marked the first time that the Supercars support races would be a points-paying round of the Supercars Championship.
