The 2017 FIBA U16 African Championship , alternatively the 5th Afrobasket U16, was an international basketball competition held in Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius [1] [2] from 13–22 July 2017. It served as the qualifier for the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup.
Mali claimed their first-ever under-16 continental title by dethroning the defending champions Egypt in the final, 76–65. Both teams will represent FIBA Africa to the Under-17 Basketball World Cup next year. [3]
On 25 March 2016, FIBA Africa announced that Mauritius will be the organising country of the tournament. [4]

On the eve of the tournament, rosters were finalized for the following participating teams: [12]
The eight teams will be divided into two groups. The Group Phase consists of two legs: for each of the teams per group, they will face each other twice. The top two teams of each group will advance to the Semifinals, and the bottom two teams of each group will move on to the Classification Round, both will be played in a knockout format. [13]
The draw for the main tournament was held on 12 July 2017 at Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius. [14]

Vacoas-Phoenix also known as French: Villes Jumelles, is a town in Mauritius, located in the Plaines Wilhems District, the eastern part also lies in the Moka District. The town is administered by the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix. The town lies between Quatre Bornes and Curepipe.
The Tunisia men's national basketball team, nicknamed The Eagles of Carthage, represents Tunisia in international basketball. The team is governed by the Tunisia Basketball Federation (FTBB). To date, she has taken part in the regional championship the AfroBasket 23 times. In terms of the number of successful performances, it is inferior to the traditionally strong teams of Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Egypt. In 2011, the Tunisian national team became the champion of Africa for the first time in its history, defeating the Angola team in the AfroBasket 2011 final. The team's previous success was silver at the home Africa Championship 1965. The team also won bronze medals in the 1970, 1974, 2009 and 2015 competitions.
AfroBasket 2009 was the 25th FIBA Africa Championship, played under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the basketball sport governing body, and the African zone thereof. At stake were the three berths allocated to Africa in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The tournament was hosted by Libya after Nigeria, the original host, withdrew from hosting after not conforming to FIBA Africa guidelines.
The FIBA Africa Championship 2009 Qualification occurred on various dates between 4 August 2008 and 31 May 2009. It was used to determine which African national basketball teams would qualify for the FIBA Africa Championship 2009. Teams competed with other teams in their respective "zones" for a spot in the Championship tournament.
The 2011 FIBA Africa Under-16 Championship for Women was the 2nd U-16 FIBA Africa championship, played under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the basketball sport governing body and qualified for the 2012 World Cup. The tournament was held from July 22–30 in Alexandria, Egypt, contested by 6 national teams and won by Mali.
The 2017 FIBA Women's AfroBasket was the 23rd AfroBasket Women, played under the rules of FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, and FIBA Africa. The tournament was hosted by Mali from 18 to 27 August 2017, with games played in Bamako. The winners and runners-up qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
