The 2017 Intrust Super Cup was the PNG Hunters fourth season in the Queensland Cup and they also won their first premiership title that year. [1]

Season Summary

The PNG Hunters won their first ever minor premiership and went on to claim their maiden premiership edging out the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the grand final 12–10. They then advanced to the NRL State Championship final against the NSW Cup champions Penrith Panthers where they were beaten 42–18 in Sydney on NRL Grand final day. [2] Ten of their players were selected in the 23-man PNG Kumuls squad for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. [3]

The history of the Penrith Panthers stretches back to the 1960s when a team from Penrith entering Sydney's elite competition was first mooted. After admission to the NSWRFL premiership in 1967, the club struggled on-field until reaching the finals for the first time in the 1980s, and reaching the grand final in the 1990s. The Panthers were a part of 1997's Super League competition before continuing in the re-unified NRL competition. The panthers have won six premierships in their history in 1991, 2003, and 4 premierships straight between 2021 and 2024.

The 2019 Intrust Super Cup was the PNG Hunters sixth season in the Queensland Cup after securing their future for the next four years until 2022. Adex Wera was the captain of the team and he was assisted by his deputy Moses Meninga The Hunters only won four of their games and drew one with a record eighteen losses for the season. 18 new players made their debuts while poor form and discipline let the team down. Five Hunters players were named in the Papua New Guinea Kumuls squad for the 2019 Oceania Cup Pool B Ox & Palm Pacific Invitational Tests against Toa Samoa and Fiji Bati and also for the match against the touring Great Britain Lions.

The 2017 Queensland Cup season was the 22nd season of Queensland's top-level statewide rugby league competition run by the Queensland Rugby League. The competition, known as the Intrust Super Cup due to sponsorship from Intrust Super, featured 14 teams playing a 29-week long season from March to September.
