The 2017 season is Ranchi Rays' third season in the Hockey India League. The season covers the period from 21 January to 26 February 2017.
The fixtures for 2017 season were drawn on 22 November 2016. [1] Playing their first game of the season against Dabang Mumbai, Rays secured a 3–3 in the away game. Christopher Rühr played roles in both goals for Rays, in the form of an assist to Simranjeet Singh in the first and a penalty shoot conversion in the second, thereby taking the team to a 3–1 lead before Mumbai equalised in the final minute with a field goal. [2] Rays lost their second game to Kalinga Lancers away with a 2–4 margin, with Sarvanjit Singh scoring the lone goal, a field goal, in the 53rd minute after Lancers scored two field goals. [3] Hosting Lancers at home, Rays earned a revenge win in the form of a 7–2 victory. Jackson converted Rays' second penalty into a goal from Manpreet Singh's injection, following Trent Mitton's miss in the 17th minute. Mohammad Amir Khan successfully deflected Sumit's pass into the post in the 30th minute giving his team a 3–0 lead, before Rühr converted Jackson's pass into a goal in the 31st minute. Rays' final goal came in the 44th minute after Manpreet Singh scored through a gap following an assist from Gurbaj Singh. [4] Rays played their next game against Delhi Waveriders at home to a goalless draw. They failed to convert a penalty corner into a goal and were also successful in fending off two of Waveriders' attempts. [5]
Playing at home, Rays lost to Punjab Warriors by a 0–7 margin in their next game on 1 February. Despite having created many chances at goal including nine penalty corners, they failed to convert any. [6] They played their next game against Dabang Mumbai the next day at home. Jackson deflected a Manpreet Singh-pass in the fifth minute into the goal to equal Mumbai's second minute field goal to 2–2. Mohammad Amir Khan then tapped a rebound from a shot from Flynn Ogilvie in the 16th minute to go 4–2. A 49th-minute penalty stroke conversion by Jackson took Rays' lead to 5–3, before Imran Khan scored in the 57th minute assisted by Simranjeet Singh, taking the lead to 7–3. Captain Jackson was handed a yellow card after his team was found playing 12 members in the field. [7] In their final away game of the season, Rays played Uttar Pradesh Wizards to a goalless draw. Prior to the players' auction held in November 2016, the franchise of Rays retained a majority of their players from the previous season and made only two new signings. Gurbaj Singh was bought for US$99,000, the highest in the league, and Christopher Rühr for US$75,000, another expensive signing, the highest for a foreign player. [9]

Moritz Fürste is a German field hockey player. He was a member of the Men's National Team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics as well as at the 2006 World Cup. He played at the Uhlenhorster Hockey Club in Hamburg from 1989 till 2012. He was captain of the team. He has guided his team to success in the Euro Hockey League on three occasions, winning the title in 2007–08, 2009–10 and 2011–12. Fürste also helped his team to a second-place finish in the competition in the 2008–09 Season, when they were defeated by HC Bloemendaal of The Netherlands. Since 2012 he is playing at Spanish Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. After retiring after season 2018-2019 he just signed a new deal with Royal Beerschot THC in Belgium for 1 season.
Sannuvanda Kushalappa Uthappa is an Indian professional field hockey player who plays as an attacking midfielder for the India national team and Kalinga Lancers at the Hockey India League.
Hockey India League or HIL is a professional field hockey league in India. The league is organized by Hockey India, the governing body for the sport in India. HIL, along with the Indian Premier League, Indian Super League, and Pro Kabaddi League, is considered one of the major sports leagues in the country. HIL used to consist of six teams, with the regular season from January to February, each team playing 10 games. The top four teams at the end of the season move into the play-offs, where the championship game decides the Hockey India League winner.
2013 Hockey India League, known as Hero Hockey India League and abbreviated as HIL 2013 was the first season of the field hockey tournament Hockey India League. Tournament was scheduled to start from 5 January to 3 February but was postponed to 14 January to 10 February.
Ranchi Rhinos was a professional field hockey team based in Ranchi, Jharkhand, that played in the Hockey India League. The team won the inaugural season of Hockey India League defeating Delhi Waveriders by 2-1. It was owned by Patel-Uniexcel Group. South African Gregg Clark was the head coach for the team, assisted by Baljit Singh Saini. German midfielder, two time Olympic champion, Moritz Fürste is the captain of the team. It was dissolved in 2014 after its owners had some dispute with HIL management. It has been replaced by Ranchi Rays.
Mandeep Singh is an Indian field hockey player who currently plays as a forward for Delhi Waveriders in the Hockey India League and the India men's national field hockey team.

Australia defeated India in the final to take their fifth consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, whilst England defeated New Zealand on penalties in the bronze medal match.
Rupinder Pal Singh is an Indian former field hockey player, who represented the India national field hockey team. He plays as a fullback and is known for his abilities as one of the best drag flickers in the world. He represented India in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, 2014 Asian Games at Incheon, 2016 Olympic Games held at Rio de Janeiro, and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at Gold Coast, Australia. He was part of the Indian hockey team that won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Ranchi Rays (RCR) is an Indian professional field hockey team based in Ranchi, Jharkhand that competes in the Hockey India League (HIL). It was announced as the newest team to replace the defunct Ranchi Rhinos on 25 October 2014. It is owned by Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Chinglensana Singh Kangujam is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a halfback. He made his debut in the Indian team in 2012, and plays for Dabang Mumbai in the Hockey India League.

David Harte is an Ireland men's field hockey international. He captained Ireland at both the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup. He was also a member of the Ireland team that won the bronze medal at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. At club level, he was a member of the SV Kampong team that won the 2015–16 Euro Hockey League. Harte has won national league titles in Ireland, the Netherlands and Malaysia and has played in the Hockey India League. In both 2015 and 2016 he was named the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year. Harte's twin brother, Conor, and his sister, Emer, are also Ireland field hockey internationals. The Harte brothers have lined out together with eight different field hockey teams – Bandon Grammar School, Cork Harlequins, Pembroke Wanderers, DCU, SCHC, Dabang Mumbai, Munster and Ireland.
The 2016 season is Ranchi Rays' second season in the Hockey India League. The season covers the period from 18 January to 21 February 2016. The season saw the introduction of a new rule according to which weightage for field goals was double compared to the goals scored from penalty corners, meaning a field goal will count as two while successfully converted short corner will still be considered as one goal.
Harmanpreet Singh is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a defender for and captains the Indian national team. He is a penalty corner specialist and is regarded as one of the best drag flickers in the world. He was the captain of the Indian field hockey team that won the bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This was his second bronze medal in three appearances at the Olympics.

Kalinga Lancers beat Dabang Mumbai 4–1 in the final to win their first title. Six teams played 34 matches in six venues with final played in Sector 42 Stadium, Chandigarh. The prize money was announced to be 3 crores INR.
Malak Singh is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a forward. He hails from Sant Nagar in Sirsa district, Haryana, where he plays for the Namdhari XI hockey team. He was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2013 Men's Hockey Asia Cup in Malaysia.
