The 2017 Southeastern Louisiana Lions football team represented Southeastern Louisiana University in the 2017 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Lions were led by sixth-year head coach Ron Roberts and played their home games at Strawberry Stadium. They were a member of the Southland Conference. [1] They finished the season 6–5, 6–3 in Southland play to finish in fifth place.
On January 19, head coach Ron Roberts resigned to become the defensive coordinator at Louisiana. [2] He finished at Southeastern Louisiana with a six-year record of 42–29.

Carl William Torbush Jr. was an American American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Louisiana Tech University in 1987, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2000, and East Tennessee State University (ETSU) from 2013 to 2017, compiling a career college football record of 31–48. Outside of football, Torbush was the head baseball coach at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1977 to 1979, tallying a mark of 75–58. Torbush retired from coaching in December 2017.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football team represents Louisiana Tech University in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. After 12 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, Louisiana Tech began competing as a member of Conference USA in 2013. Since 1968, the Bulldogs have played their home games at Joe Aillet Stadium. Since its first season in 1901, Louisiana Tech has compiled an all-time record of 642 wins, 498 losses, and 38 ties. In 123 football seasons, the Bulldogs have won 3 Division II national championships, won 25 conference championships, and played in 28 postseason games, including 13 major college bowl games. The Bulldogs are currently coached by Sonny Cumbie.

They finished the season 5–6, 5–2 in Southland play to finish in third place.
The 2013 Southeastern Louisiana Lions football team represented Southeastern Louisiana University in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Lions were led by second-year head coach Ron Roberts and played their home games at Strawberry Stadium. They were a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 11–3, 7–0 in Southland play to win the Southland Conference championship. They received the conference's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs where they defeated fellow Southland member Sam Houston State in the second round before losing in the quarterfinals to New Hampshire.
The 2014 Sam Houston State Bearkats football team represented Sam Houston State University in the 2014 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bearkats were led by first-year head coach K. C. Keeler and played their home games at Bowers Stadium. They are a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 11–5, 7–1 in Southland play to finish in a share of the Southland Conference title. They received the Southland's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs where they defeated Southeastern Louisiana, Jacksonville State, and Villanova to advance to the Semifinals where they lost to North Dakota State. But, along the way they lost to eventual D-2 Champion CSU-Pueblo.

The 2016 Georgia Bulldogs football team represented the University of Georgia in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bulldogs played their home games at Sanford Stadium. They were members of the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. They were led by first-year head coach Kirby Smart. They finished the season 8–5, 4–4 in SEC play to finish in a three-way tie for second place in the Eastern Division. They were invited to the Liberty Bowl where they defeated TCU.

The Hilltoppers played their home games at the Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and competed in the East Division of Conference USA (C–USA). They were led by third year head coach Jeff Brohm. They finished the season 11–3, 7–1 in C-USA play to win a share of the East Division title with Old Dominion. Due to their head-to-head victory over Old Dominion, Western Kentucky represented the East Division in the Conference USA Championship Game where they defeated Louisiana Tech to be crowned C-USA champions. They were invited to the Boca Raton Bowl where they defeated Memphis. This team led the NCAA in Scoring Offense.

Lance Guidry is an American football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, a position he has held since the 2023 season. Guidry served as the head football coach at McNeese State University from 2016 to 2018. He was also the interim head football coach at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for one game in 2010 and at Western Kentucky University for one game in 2012. Guidry played college football as a defensive back at McNeese State from 1990 to 1993. He was a four-year starter, a team captain, and a two-time All-Southland Conference selection. Guidry ranks 17th on the McNeese all-time tackle leader board and also 10th in interceptions.

The Lady Lions, led by first year head coach Ayla Guzzardo, played their home games at the University Center. They were members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season with an 8–21 overall record and a, 7–11 record in Southland play to finish in ninth place. They failed to qualify for the Southland women's tournament.

The Lions were led by fifth-year head coach Jay Ladner, and played their home games at the University Center in Hammond, Louisiana as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 17–16 overall, 12–6 in Southland play to finish in a three-way tie for third place. As the No. 3 seed in the Southland tournament, they advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Abilene Christian.

Although Southland institutions could have chosen to participate in limited fall competition, Southeastern Louisiana announced on August 13, that they would not compete in any athletic competitions in the fall.
Thomas Condell is a professional Canadian football coach who is the offensive coordinator for the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is a Grey Cup champion having won as an assistant coach with the Toronto Argonauts in 2017. He played college football as a wide receiver for the Lock Haven Bald Eagles and Cortland Red Dragons.
