The Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, where they beat Elizabeth City State in the first round before losing to Winston-Salem State in the second round. Gary Dunn is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach for California University of Pennsylvania, a position he has held since 2016. In his first season as head coach, in 2016, he led the California Vulcans to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship and a birth in the NCAA Division II Football Championship.

The 2016 PSAC Football Championship Game was held on November 12, 2016 at a Hepner–Bailey Field at Adamson Stadium. The two teams from each division played for the PSAC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Football Championship.

The 2021 California Vulcans football team represented California University of Pennsylvania as a member of the West Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) during the 2021 NCAA Division II football season. Led by sixth-year head coach Gary Dunn, California compiled an overall record of 9–1 with a mark of 5–1 in conference play, sharing PSAC West Division title with Slippery Rock, who dealt the Vulcans their only loss of the season. By virtue of the head-to-head win Slippery Rock earned a berth in the PSAC Football Championship Game. California was ranked No. 21 in the final AFCA poll, but was not selected for the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs. The Vulcans played their home games at Hepner–Bailey Field at Adamson Stadium in California, Pennsylvania.

The 2019 Shepherd Rams football team represented Shepherd University as a member of the East Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) during the 2019 NCAA Division II football season. Led by second-year head coach Ernie McCook, the Rams compiled an overall record of 10–3 with a mark of 6–1 in conference play, placing second in the PSAC's East Division. Shepherd advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, where they beat IUP in the first round before losing in the second round at Slippery Rock. The Rams played their home games at Ram Stadium in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

The 2022 Shepherd Rams football team represented Shepherd University as a member of the East Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) during the 2022 NCAA Division II football season. Led by fifth-year head coach Ernie McCook, the Rams compiled an overall record of 13–2 with a mark of 7–0 in conference play, winning the PSAC East Division title. Shepherd lost the PSAC Championship Game to West Division champion IUP. The Rams advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, where they beat New Haven in the first round, Slippery Rock in the second round, and IUP in the quarterfinal, before falling to Colorado Mines in the semifinals. The team played home games at Ram Stadium in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The 2022 season was the third for the Rams as a member of the PSAC after joining the conference in 2019.
