Background

Previous election

Previous election was held in 2014. ANO 2011 has won the election. ANO then negotiated with Ostravak, KDU-ČSL and ODS about possible coalition. [1] Negotiations were unsuccessful and Ostravak agreed to form coalition with ČSSD and KSČM. [2] This coalition broke quickly afterwards giving ANO 2011 new opportunity. [3] Coalition was finally formed between ANO, ČSSD and KDU-ČSL and leader of Ostravan ANO Tomáš Macura became new Mayor. [4] Coalition ruled Ostrava until December 2015 when ĆSSD and KDU-ČSL left the coalition. ANO 2011 the formed new coalition with ODS and Ostravak. [5]

Campaign

ANO 2011 decided to nominate incumbent Mayor Romáš Macura as its leader on 20 January 2018. [6]

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) announced on 12 February 2018 that Senator Zdeněk Nytra will lead party in the election. TOP 09 and Freeholder Party of the Czech Republic decided to support ODS in the election. [7]

Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) had to deal with inner problems during March 2018. 6 deputies left the party. It reduced ČSSD to only 7 seats in Assembly. Deputies who left the party, included Lumír Palyza who led the party in previous election. [8]

Parliamentary elections were held in the Czech Republic on 8 and 9 October 2021. All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected, with the leader of the resulting government to become the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Plzeň municipal election in 2014 was held as part of 2014 Czech municipal elections. It was held on 10 and 11 October 2014. ANO 2011 received the highest number of votes but Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) won the same number of seats in the City's assembly. Civic Democratic Party ruled in Plzeň more than 20 years but was expected to lose its positions and receive only 10% of votes. In an electoral upset, ODS received more than 17%. Leader of local Civic Democrats Martin Baxa said that he believes that ODS was the actual victor of the election. Voter turnout was 33.73%.

Municipal election in Ostrava was held as part of Czech municipal elections in 2014. It was a victory of ANO 2011. Tomáš Macura then became new Mayor when he formed coalition with ČSSD and KDU-ČSL.

Senate district 70 – Ostrava-City is electoral district to the Senate, upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, comprising part of Ostrava-City District. The district is represented by Civic Democratic Senator Zdeněk Nytra.

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 5 and 6 October 2018 alongside municipal elections, with a second round held on 12 and 13 October 2018. The Conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won the election with 10 seats. Governing parties ANO 2011 and the Czech Social Democratic Party were heavily defeated, winning only 1 seat each. The Communist Party lost its last seat in the Senate when Václav Homolka failed to be re-elected, meaning the party would be without representation in the Senate for the first time in the history of Czech Republic. The election was considered the first major win for the opposition to Andrej Babiš' Cabinet. Commentators including Josef Kopecký also noted ODS confirmed their position as the main opposition party, ahead of the Czech Pirate Party.

The Plzeň municipal election in 2018 was held as part of 2018 Czech municipal elections on 5 and 6 October 2018. Plzeň was led by a coalition of the Civic Democratic Party, Czech Social Democratic Party, Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party and Citizens Patriots. ANO 2011 was the strongest opposition party. ANO 2011 has won the popular vote but tied with the Civic Democratic Party by number of seats. Coalition formed after the election was formed on 15 October 2018 consisting ANO 2011, Civic Democratic Party, TOP 09 and Czech Social Democratic Party. Martin Baxa became the new Mayor.

Brno municipal election in 2018 was held as part of 2018 Czech municipal elections. ANO 2011 led by incumbent Mayor Petr Vokřál received highest number of votes being followed by Civic Democratic Party (ODS). ODS formed coalition with KDU-ČSL, ČSSD and Pirates after the election. Markéta Vaňková of ODS became the new Mayor.

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 23 and 24 September 2022 alongside municipal elections. The election were won by the Spolu alliance consisting of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), KDU-ČSL and TOP 09 which won 20 seats. The ODS was the most successful party, winning eight seats.

The 2022 Prague municipal election was held in September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections. It was a victory for Spolu which received the highest number of votes and seats ahead of ANO 2011 in second place. The Czech Pirate Party led by incumbent Mayor Zdeněk Hřib finished third. New coalition was formed 5 months after election and it consists of Spolu, Pirates and STAN. Bohuslav Svoboda became the new mayor.

The 2022 Brno municipal election was held on 23 and 24 September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections. Coalition of Civic Democratic Party and TOP 09 led by incumbent Mayor Markéta Vaňková has won the election. Following election ODS and TOP 09 formed wide coalition with ANO 2011, KDU-ČSL, STAN, Pirates and ČSSD. Markéta Vaňková is set to continue as Mayor.

The 2022 Ostrava municipal election was held on 23 and 24 September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections. ANO 2011 has won the third election in row.

The 2022 Plzeň municipal election was held on 23 and 24 September 2022 as part of the nationwide municipal elections. The result was a narrow victory for Spolu which received highest number of votes but was tied with ANO 2011 by number of seats. After the election ANO 2011 formed coalition with Czech Pirate Party and Mayors and Independents with Roman Zarzycký as the new Mayor. New coalition was to be supported by 2 SPD members of the assembly but after disagreement of Piráti and STAN leadership they were replaced by PRO Plzeň.
