Sorana Mihaela Cîrstea is a Romanian professional tennis player. In singles, she achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 21 on 12 August 2013. In doubles, her career-high ranking is No. 35, which she reached on 9 March 2009. Her biggest achievements include reaching the quarterfinals at the 2009 French Open and the final at the 2013 Rogers Cup.
Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final, 6–7(6–8), 7–5, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Indian Wells Masters.

Naomi Osaka defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 Indian Wells Masters. It was her first WTA Tour title. This was the first time two players under 21 had contested the final since Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams in 2001. At 20 years old, Osaka was the youngest Indian Wells Masters champion since Ana Ivanovic in 2008, and the youngest at any Premier Mandatory event since Caroline Wozniacki at the 2010 China Open. She was also only the third unseeded player to win the tournament after Serena Williams (1999) and Clijsters (2005), and the first Japanese player to win a Premier Mandatory title.
Sloane Stephens defeated Jeļena Ostapenko in the final, 7–6(7–5), 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 Miami Open. It was Stephens' sixth career singles title, first Premier Mandatory title, and first title since winning the US Open back in September. This marked the second consecutive year where a player won the tournament as her first WTA Tour singles title.

It was organised as a lead-up tournament to the 2021 Australian Open, and was held at the same venue, due to other tournaments in Australia being cancelled as a result from the COVID-19 pandemic. This tournament took place simultaneously with the second week of the 2021 Australian Open.

Paula Badosa defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–6(7–5), 2–6, 7–6(7–2) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Indian Wells Masters. At three hours and four minutes, the final was the longest women's final contested at Indian Wells. Badosa became the first Spanish woman to win the title. This was her first WTA 1000 title and her second career WTA Tour singles title overall. Azarenka was aiming to become the first woman to win the title three times.

The last time was 23 years ago, when Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis contested the Indian Wells and Miami finals.
