The 2020 Surakarta mayoral election was held on 9 December 2020, as part of the 2020 simultaneous local elections across Indonesia. The mayoral seat was contested between Gibran Rakabuming Raka and independent candidate Bagyo Wahyono.
There were two candidates running in the election: [2] [3]
The local office of PDI-P initially appeared to be intent on nominating Surakarta's deputy mayor Achmad Purnomo for the mayoral race, but Gibran entered the race through the provincial branch of the party, and the central board of the party itself eventually opted to nominate Gibran, alongside Teguh Prakosa who was the party's secretary in Surakarta. Achmad himself had also previously made statements regarding his intention to withdraw his mayoral nomination. [4] The incumbent mayor F. X. Hadi Rudyatmo had previously endorsed Purnomo, but accepted Gibran's nomination. [5]
Bagyo was accepted as an independent candidate after collecting enough support in form of ID card submissions numbering 38,831, in excess of the 35,870 required to be accepted. His candidacy was based on grassroots support by the Tikus Pithi Hanoto Baris organization. His running mate, FX Supardjo, served as the head of a local rukun warga community. [6] [7]
Along with other elections in the 2020 local elections, face-to-face campaigning which could result in large crowds are explicitly prohibited by the General Elections Commission (KPU), due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, Wahyono's campaign team stated that they would continue to conduct their campaigning offline, citing the effectivity of such methods compared to online campaigns, [8] and supporters of both candidates formed sizeable crowds during both candidates' registration to the KPU office. Public debates were held between the two candidates on 6 November and 23 November 2020. [3] [10]

Elections in Indonesia have taken place since 1955 to elect a legislature. At a national level, Indonesian people did not elect a head of state – the president – until 2004. Since then, the president is elected for a five-year term, as are the 580-member People's Representative Council, the 152-seat Regional Representative Council in 2024 general election, in addition to provincial and municipal legislative councils.

He resigned the mayoralty in November 2022, and was succeeded by his deputy, Hevearita Gunaryanti Rahayu.
Gibran Rakabuming Raka is an Indonesian politician and businessman who is the 14th vice president of Indonesia. He is also the former mayor of Surakarta. He is the eldest child of the seventh President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. In the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, he ran as the vice-presidential candidate of Prabowo Subianto.
The 2005 Surakarta mayoral election took place on 27 June 2005, as the first direct mayoral election for the city. Four pairs of candidates for Surakarta's mayor and deputy mayor participated in the election. The election was famous because it was won by Joko Widodo, who would later become President of Indonesia in 2014.
2020 Depok mayoral election is the general election to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Depok for the period 2021 – 2024. This election was held by the Depok City Election Commission (KPU) which was held on December 9, 2020.
The 2020 Makassar mayoral election was held on 9 December 2020, as part of the 2020 simultaneous local elections in Indonesia. It is a repeat of the previous election held in 2018, an uncontested election where the none of the above option won a majority. The 2020 election saw the previous incumbent mayor, Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, the 2018 single candidate Munafri Arifuddin, run as mayor along with former deputy mayor Syamsu Rizal and former East Luwu regent Irman Yasin Limpo. Pomanto managed to beat the other three candidates to secure a second term after winning 41.3 percent of votes.

The People's Sovereignty Party is a minor political party in Indonesia. The party was founded on 28 October 2021 by Sukoharjo activist and local organisation chief Tuntas Subagyo, who serves as the party chairperson. An unrelated party by the same name existed in the 1950s and had representation in the Provisional House of Representatives.
Local executive elections to elect governors, mayors and regents in Indonesia were held on 27 November 2024 across 548 regions: 37 provinces, 415 regencies and 93 cities, which covered all provinces except Yogyakarta Special Region and all cities/regencies except the constituents of Jakarta. The 2024 Central Java gubernatorial election was held on 27 November 2024 as part of nationwide local elections to elect the Governor of Central Java for a five-year term. The election was contested by former Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Andika Perkasa, primarily backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, and former provincial chief of police Ahmad Luthfi, backed by a wide coalition of parties led by Luthfi's party Gerindra.

The 2018 Malang mayoral election was held on 27 June 2018 as part of simultaneous local elections to elect the mayor of Malang, East Java for a five-year term. The previous election was held in 2013. Three candidates contested the election including incumbent Mochammad Anton, but due to a corruption case, Anton and another candidate, Ya'qud Ananda Gudban, were arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission prior to the election date. The unarrested incumbent vice mayor, Sutiaji won the election with 44.5% of votes.
Teguh Prakosa is an Indonesian politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle who has served as the mayor of Surakarta, Central Java since 19 July 2024, replacing Gibran Rakabuming Raka who was elected Vice President of Indonesia. He was previously the vice mayor of Gibran between 2021 and 2024, and had been elected three terms to Surakarta's city council.
The 2024 Indonesian local election law protests, also known as Emergency Alert for Indonesia or Indonesian Democratic Emergency, were public and student-led demonstrations against the House of Representatives for drafting a bill on regional head elections (Pilkada) that contradicts the Constitutional Court's ruling and power, intended to regulate the 2024 Indonesian local elections.
