Local elections (Indonesian: Pemilihan Kepala Daerah or Pilkada) were held in Indonesia on 9 December 2020. Voters elected nine governors, 224 regents, and 37 mayors across the country. All the elections were held on the same day, and over 100 million people were expected to be eligible to vote. [1]
Simultaneous local elections (Pilkada Serentak) were first held in Indonesia in 2015. [2] The leadup to the 2020 elections saw several regulations being issued by the General Elections Commission (KPU) barring certain candidates from running, from adulterers [3] to politicians who had been charged with corruption. [4] The decision that the simultaneous local elections throughout Indonesia would be held amid the COVID-19 pandemic stirred some controversy in the Indonesian public. [5] [6]
KPU released a schedule for the election in June 2019. Registration for the candidates would be held between 28 and 30 April 2020, with a campaign period lasting between June and September. The voting itself was initially planned for 23 September 2020. [7] In October 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs estimated that the election would require an expenditure of Rp 15.3 trillion (around US$1.1 billion), around double the budget for the 2015 local elections. [8] In May 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, President Joko Widodo issued a regulation postponing the election to December 2020, with further postponement being possible if the pandemic had not subsided by then. [9]
The new schedule for the elections was released in June, with the new election date set for 9 December 2020 and the campaigning period being set between 26 September and 5 December 2020. [10]
This election schedule planned by the Election Committee (KPU) and the government was opposed by several activists because by forcing a major event during a pandemic, they were breaching several Laws (UU Kekarantinaan Kesehatan & UU Wabah Penyakit Menular) [11] which raising the risk of disease contagion among the people. There were more than 1500 health protocol violations during the campaigns, [12] and 70.000 ballot officers tested reactive from COVID rapid tests and could not immediately be replaced. [13]
In December 2020 also, the government insisted on holding Pilkades Serentak (Simultaneous village leader elections) in more than 1200 villages. [14]

Local elections were held in Indonesia on 27 June 2018. Voters elected 17 governors, 39 mayors and 115 regents across the country. The elections included gubernatorial elections for Indonesia's four most populous provinces: West Java, East Java, Central Java and North Sumatra.
The 2018 West Java gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of West Java along with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.
The 2018 Central Java gubernatorial election was held on 27 June 2018 to elect both the governor and vice governor of Central Java. The election, which took place alongside local elections across Indonesia, saw the re-election of the incumbent, Ganjar Pranowo, over former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said.
The 2018 North Sumatra gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of North Sumatra along with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.
The 2018 South Sulawesi Gubernatorial Election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of South Sulawesi along with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.
The 2018 Bandung mayoral election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the mayor of Bandung along with their deputy.
The 2018 Makassar mayoral election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the mayor of Makassar and the deputy mayor.
Local elections were held in Indonesia on 15 February 2017, with a single run-off for Jakarta on 19 April 2017. The series of elections was the second time local elections were held simultaneously across the country after the 2015 local elections. In total, the election contested 7 gubernatorial, 18 mayoral and 76 regent seats with 41 million eligible voters and 337 candidate pairs.

The 2018 West Kalimantan gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of West Kalimantan along with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.
2020 Depok mayoral election is the general election to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Depok for the period 2021 – 2024. This election was held by the Depok City Election Commission (KPU) which was held on December 9, 2020.
The 2020 Surakarta mayoral election was held on 9 December 2020, as part of the 2020 simultaneous local elections across Indonesia. The mayoral seat was contested between Gibran Rakabuming Raka and independent candidate Bagyo Wahyono.
The 2020 West Sumatra gubernatorial election was held on 9 December 2020 in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as part of the simultaneous local elections. This election was held by the West Sumatra Regional General Elections Commission (KPU), to elect the Governor of West Sumatra along with his deputy to a 2021–2024 mandate.
The 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election will be held on 27 November 2024 to elect both the governor and vice-governor of Jakarta for a five-year term. The election will be held as part of local elections for governors, regents, and mayors across Indonesia.
The Advanced Indonesia Coalition, formerly the Great Indonesia Awakening Coalition, is an official political coalition in Indonesia which was formed through a political agreement between two parties from the Onward Indonesia Coalition, namely the Gerindra Party (Gerindra) and the National Awakening Party (PKB), to nominate Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defence, as a presidential candidate in 2024 Indonesian presidential election.
Local executive elections to elect governors, mayors and regents in Indonesia will be held on 27 November 2024 across 548 regions: 37 provinces, 415 regencies and 93 cities, which covered all provinces except Yogyakarta Special Region and all cities/regencies except the constituents of Jakarta. The previous local executive elections were held in 2020. The elections will be the first time regional leaders are all elected simultaneously nationwide in Indonesia.
Gubernatorial election will be held on North Sumatra in 2024 alongside other local elections nationwide to elect the Governor of North Sumatra to a five-year term. The election will be held on 27 November 2024.
The 2024 Central Papua gubernatorial election will be held on 27 November 2024 as part of nationwide local elections to elect the governor of Central Papua for a five-year term. The election will be the first gubernatorial election for the province since its creation.
The 2020 South Tangerang mayoral election was held on 9 December 2020 to elect the mayor of South Tangerang as part of the 2020 Indonesian local elections. The incumbent mayor, Airin Rachmi Diany, was term-limited and couldn't run for re-election. The sitting vice-mayor, Benyamin Davnie of Golkar, was elected in her stead, winning more than 40% of the vote.
