Mahyeldi Ansharullah (born 25 December 1966) is an Indonesian politician from the Prosperous Justice Party who is the current governor of West Sumatra. He was made mayor of Padang in 2014,following a five-year tenure as deputy and victory in the elections of 2013 and 2018.
Active in Islamic dawah since his years in Andalas University,he became a member of the Islamist Prosperous Justice Party and first became an elected official in 2004 when he was elected to the province council. His programs as mayor of Padang has included the improvement of the city's infrastructure and hygiene,in addition to education with an added emphasis on studies of the Quran.
In March 2020,Mahyeldi said he will waive his six months' salary amid the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] [2] [3]
Born in the city of Bukittinggi as the first son of seven siblings,his father was a becak driver. He began showing interest in dawah in his teen years,when he was studying in a local junior high school. [4] After completing his 12th year of study in Bukittinggi,he continued his education in Andalas University at Padang,the provincial capital.
Mahyeldi began his political activity following the fall of Suharto,joining the newly formed Prosperous Justice Party where he became the provincial chairman between 2002 and 2005. He took part in the 2004 elections and won a seat in the provincial council as deputy speaker. He then resigned to run in the 2008 local elections as deputy mayor with Fauzi Bahar as his running mate. Following their victory,he was made deputy mayor on 18 February the following year. [5]
In the next election on 2013,he ran with Emzalmi against 9 other candidates for mayorship. After securing just 29.45% of the votes in the first round, [6] he won 50.29% of the votes in the runoffs. Despite an initial challenge to the Constitutional Court, [7] he was officially made mayor on 13 May 2014. [8]
He established pesantren in the ramadhan in public schools on 2015 where it had formerly been held in mosques, [9] and offered scholarships to students who had memorized sufficient Juz' of the Quran. [10] In 2018,he led a march attended by thousands which denounced LGBT individuals. During the rally,Mahyeldi declared his opposition to LGBT rights,stating that "To the perpetrators of sin,let them repent and those who protect them immediately be aware because they will face opposition from all parties and communities in Padang as well as security forces.” [lower-alpha 1] [12]
Mahyeldi was elected as governor in the 2020 West Sumatra gubernatorial election,winning 32.43 percent of votes. [13] He was sworn in as governor on 25 February 2021. [14]
Bukittinggi is the third largest city in West Sumatra, Indonesia, with a population of 111,312 in 2010 and 121,028 in 2020, and an official estimate as at mid 2022 of 122,311 - comprising 61,198 males and 61,113 females. It covers an area of 25.24 km2. It is located in the Minangkabau Highlands, 90 km by road from the West Sumatran capital city of Padang. The whole area directly borders to the Agam Regency, making it an enclave, and is located at 0°18′20″S100°22′9″E, near the volcanoes Mount Singgalang (inactive) and Mount Marapi. At 930 m above sea level, the city has a cool climate with temperatures between 16.1° to 24.9 °C.
Andalas University is a public research university in Padang, West Sumatra. Andalas is one of the major public institution of higher learning in Indonesia, and the oldest outside the island of Java. The university is known for its excellence in social sciences and medical program, and has produced numerous distinguished alumni in public and private service. In November 2019, Andalas was ranked fourth best Indonesian research university from a nationwide evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Research and Technology.

Bagindo Azizchan, was an Indonesian independence fighter and second Mayor of Padang after independence, inaugurated on 15 August 1946, replacing Abubakar Jaar. He died at the age of 36 after being involved in a battle against Dutch forces. His body was buried at the Bahagia Heroes Cemetery, Bukittinggi. On 9 November 2005, Bagindo Azizchan was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.
Harnojoyo is an Indonesian politician of the Democratic Party who is the current mayor of Palembang, South Sumatra. He was elevated into office following the arrest of his predecessor Romi Herton for bribery. He was initially elected as deputy with Herton as his running mate during the city's 2013 local elections.
