Sumenep, [a] officially the Sumenep Regency, [b] was previously spelled as Samanap or Zamanap in English, [6] is a regency of the East Java province,Indonesia. It has an area of 2,093.47 square kilometres (808.29 sq mi) and the population of 1,142,210 (comprising 551,366 males and 590,844 females) as of 2023. [1] The administrative capital is Kota Sumenep. Since 2014,Sumenep Regency has been recognized by UNESCO as the area that has the most Mpu (makers of heirlooms) in the world and most of them are in Aeng Tong-Tong Village,Saronggi District.
The regency occupies the eastern end of Madura island and also includes numerous smaller islands to the east (primarily Talango Island,the Sapudi Islands,and the Kangean Islands),to the north (the Masalembu Islands),and to the south (the Giligenteng Islands) of Madura. It is bordered by the Pamekasan Regency to the west,Madura Strait to the south,and the Java Sea to the north and east. The airport nearby is Trunojoyo Airport with flights to Surabaya.
Sumenep Regency is located at the eastern end of Madura Island;it also includes 126 scattered islands located between 113 °32'54 "-116 °16'48" East Longitude and between 4 °55'-7 °24 'South latitude. The regency is bordered to the south by the Strait of Madura and the Bali Sea,to the north by the Java Sea,to the west by Pamekasan Regency (the only land border),and to the east by the Java Sea and the Flores Sea.
The total land area of Sumenep Regency is 2,093.47 km2:this was formerly quoted as comprising 179.32 km2 of settlements,423.96 km2 of forest,14.68 km2 of grass area or vacant land,1,130.19 km2 of farm/moor/bush/field,59.07 km2 of pool/aquaculture/brackish water/lakes/reservoirs/wetlands,and 63.41 km2 of "other" areas. The marine area of Sumenep Regency,with its vast diversity of marine resources and potential for fishery,is about 9,319.65 km2.
Sumenep has a tropical savanna climate (Aw) with May to November and heavy rainfall from December to April.

Sumenep Regency is divided into twenty-seven districts (kecamatan),listed below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 census [8] and the 2020 census, [9] together with the official estimates as of mid-2023. [1] The table also includes the location of the district administrative centres,the number of administrative villages in each district (totaling 328 rural desa and 4 urban kelurahan - the latter all in Kota Sumenep District),and their postcodes.
Sumenep Regency,besides including the eastern quarter of Madura Island,also includes many offshore islands - notably the Kangean Islands to the east of Madura,the smaller Sapudi Islands lying between Madura and the Kangean Islands,and Talango Island closer to Madura;it also includes the small Masalembu Islands to the north (between Madura and Kalimantan) and the Giligenteng Islands to the southeast of Madura. The mainland (i.e. the area on Madura Island itself) covers 1,156.07 km2 (with 808,553 inhabitants in mid 2023) consisting of 18 districts,while the various islands are 937.40 km2 in area (with 333,657 people in mid 2023),comprising 9 districts,with 128 islands,46 inhabited. Bengkalis Regency is a regency of Indonesia in Riau Province. The regency was originally established in 1956 and then included most of the northern part of the province, but on 4 October 1999 it was divided up, with most of the territory being split off to form the new Rokan Hilir Regency, Siak Regency and the city of Dumai. On 19 December 2008 a further five districts were removed to create the new Meranti Islands Regency, leaving eight districts in the Bengkalis Regency. These eight districts has increased since 2010 to eleven by the splitting of existing districts on the Sumatran mainland.
Banyumas Regency is an inland regency in the southwestern part of Central Java province in Indonesia. Its capital is the town of Purwokerto, but that town no longer has a central administration and is split over four of the districts within the Regency, with a combined area of 41.65 km2 and a population of 234,467 as of mid-2023. The Regency covers an area of 1,391.15 km2, and had a population of 1,554,527 at the 2010 Census and 1,776,918 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate of the population as of mid-2023 was 1,828,573.
Cilacap Regency is a regency in the southwestern part of Central Java province in Indonesia. Its capital is the town of Cilacap, which had 260,376 inhabitants in mid 2023, spread over three administrative districts.
Sikka is a regency within East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, on the island of Flores. It is bordered to the west by Ende Regency and to the east by East Flores Regency. Pamekasan Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of the province of East Java, Indonesia. It is located on Madura Island approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi) east of Surabaya, the provincial capital. The regency covers an area of 792.30 square kilometres (305.91 sq mi), and at the 2010 census it had a population of 795,918 ; at the 2020 census the total was 850,057 and the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 882,837 – comprising 431,891 males and 450,946 females. The administrative capital is the town of Pamekasan.
Sampang Regency is a regency of East Java province, Indonesia. It is situated on Madura Island, bordering on Pamekasan Regency to the east, the Java Sea to the north, Bangkalan Regency to the west, and Madura Strait to the south. It covers an area of 1,228.25 km2, and had a population of at the 2010 census 877,772 and at the 2020 census 969,694; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 988,360 - comprising 488,900 males and 499,460 females. The administrative centre is the port of Sampang, on the south coast of Madura.
Sukabumi Regency is a regency (kabupaten) in southwestern Java, as part of West Java province of Indonesia. The regency seat is located in Palabuhan Ratu, a coastal district facing the Indian Ocean. The regency fully encircles the administratively separated city of Sukabumi. Covering an area of 4,164.15 km2, the regency is the largest regency in West Java and the second largest regency on Java after the Banyuwangi Regency in East Java. The regency had a population of 2,341,409 at the 2010 census and 2,725,450 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 2,802,404, with a large proportion of it living in the northeastern part of the regency that encircles Sukabumi City, south of Mount Gede. A plan to create a new regency, the putative North Sukabumi Regency, was considered by the Indonesian government in 2013, but has been deferred until the end of the current morotorium on new creations of regencies.
Pandeglang Regency is a regency of Banten province, Indonesia. It is mainly located on the west and south coasts of the island of Java and is the most westerly regency on Java Island, but it also includes several offshore islands such as Panaitan, Peucang, Deli and Tinjil. It is bounded by Serang Regency to the north, Lebak Regency to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Sunda Strait to the west. The regency has a land area of 3,053.13 km2, and a population at the 2010 Census of 1,149,610, rising to 1,272,687 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 1,391,056. The regency seat is the town of Pandeglang in the northeast of the regency, but the most densely-populated district outside of the northeast agglomeration is the town of Labuan on the west coast.

Kutai Kartanegara Regency is a regency of East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. It has a land area of 27,263.10 km2 and a water area of 4,097 km2, geographically located between 1°18′40″S and 116°31′36″E. The population of the regency was 626,286 at the 2010 Census and 729,382 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 788,113. The town of Tenggarong is the capital of the regency.
East Sumba Regency is geographically the largest of the four regencies which divide the island of Sumba, within East Nusa Tenggara Province of Indonesia. It occupies 62% of the entire island, being much less densely populated than the western third. The town of Waingapu is the capital of East Sumba Regency. The population of East Sumba Regency was 227,732 at the 2010 Census and 244,820 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 255,498.
East Flores Regency is a regency in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. Established in 1958, the regency has its seat (capital) in Larantuka on Flores Island. It covers a land area of 1,812.65 km2, and it had a population of 232,605 as of the 2010 census and 276,896 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 289,376. The regency encompasses the eastern tip of the island of Flores, together with all of the adjacent islands of Adonara and Solor to the east of Flores, with some much smaller offshore islands. On 4 October 1999, the island of Lembata at the eastern end of the Solor Archipelago was separated from the East Flores Regency to create its own Regency.
Manggarai Regency is a regency in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, situated on the island of Flores. Established in 1958 to encompass the 6,924.18 km2 area of the lands of the indigenous Manggarai people, the regency was reduced in area and in population by the separation of the more western districts to form West Manggarai Regency on 25 February 2003 and of the more eastern districts to form East Manggarai Regency on 17 July 2007.
Paser Regency is the southernmost regency (kabupaten) within the East Kalimantan province of Indonesia. It was created in 1959, originally spelt "Pasir Regency", but renamed "Paser" in 2007; however its northeastern districts were split off on 10 April 2002 to form the new Penajam North Paser Regency. The residual regency covers an area of 11,603.94 km2, and it had a population of 230,316 at the 2010 Census and 275,452 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid-2023 was 303,424. Its administrative centre is the town of Tana Paser.
Katingan Regency is one of the thirteen regencies which comprise the Central Kalimantan Province on the island of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. It was created on 10 April 2002 from what were previously the eastern districts of East Kotawaringin Regency. The town of Kasongan is the capital of the Regency, which covers an area of 20,382.26 km2. The population of Katingan Regency was 146,439 at the 2010 Census and 162,222 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 177,106.
West Kotawaringin Regency is one of the thirteen regencies which comprise the Central Kalimantan Province on the island of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. It originally comprised the whole western part of the province, having been split from a single Kotawaringin Regency on 26 June 1959 into separate regencies for West and East Kotawaringin, but on 10 April 2002 the most westerly districts of West Kotawaringin were split off to form the new Lamandau Regency and Sukamara Regency. The residual West Kotawaringin Regency has a land area of about 10,816.56 km2, and its population was 235,803 at the 2010 Census and 270,388 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 280,812. The large town of Pangkalan Bun in Arut Selatan District is the capital of West Kotawaringin Regency.
Kota Sumenep, officially the Kota Sumenep District, is a town and district which serves as the regency seat of Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia. It is the second smallest and populated district in Sumenep Regency, with an area of 27.84 square kilometres and the population of 75,367 as of 2023. The administrative capital is Pamolokan. On 29 June 2004, part of the Kota Sumenep District was expanded into a separate district, namely Batuan District.
