North Luwu Regency is a regency of South Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. It was created on 20 April 1999 by separation of the province's northern districts formerly within the Luwu Regency; however on 25 February 2003 it was reduced when the easternmost of these same districts were split off to create the East Luwu Regency. It now covers 7,502.58 km2 and had a population of 287,606 at the 2010 census[2] and 322,919 at the 2020 census;[3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 333,127 (comprising 168,133 males and 164,994 females).[1] The principal town lies at Masamba.
In 1999, during the early days of the Reform movement across the Republic of Indonesia, Law No. 22 of 1999 concerning Regional Government was enacted, changing the governance mechanism towards Regional Autonomy.
Specifically, on February 10, 1999, the Luwu Regency DPRD issued Decree No. 03/Kpts/DPRD/II/1999 regarding the Proposal and Approval of the Expansion of the Luwu Dati II Regency, which was divided into two regencies. Subsequently, the Governor of South Sulawesi followed up with Decree No. 136/776/OTODA dated February 12, 1999. Finally, on April 20, 1999, North Luwu Regency was established as stipulated in the Republic of Indonesia Law No. 13 of 1999.
Administrative districts
North Luwu Regency in 2010 comprised eleven administrative Districts (Kecamatan), but subsequently four further districts have been added by the division of existing districts. These fifteen districts are tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 census[2] and the 2020 census,[3] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023.[1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the numbers of administrative villages in each district (totalling 7 urban kelurahan and 166 rural desa), and its post code.
