Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Riau, and a major economic center on the eastern side of Sumatra Island with its name derived from the Malay (Indonesian) word for 'new market' . It has an area of 632.26 km2 (244.12 sq mi), with a population of 897,767 at the 2010 Census, and 983,356 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,123,348. It is located on the banks of the Siak River, which flows into the Strait of Malacca, Pekanbaru has direct access to the busy strait and has long been known as a trading port.
Bengkalis Regency is a regency of Indonesia in Riau Province. The regency was originally established in 1956 and then included most of the northern part of the province, but on 4 October 1999 it was divided up, with most of the territory being split off to form the new Rokan Hilir Regency, Siak Regency and the city of Dumai. On 19 December 2008 a further five districts were removed to create the new Meranti Islands Regency, leaving eight districts in the Bengkalis Regency. These eight districts has increased since 2010 to eleven by the splitting of existing districts on the Sumatran mainland.
Dumai, is a coastal city in Riau Province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, about 188 km from Pekanbaru, the provincial capital. The city has an area of 2,065.59 km2 and had 338,064 inhabitants at the mid 2023 official estimate. Dumai has a domestic airport, Pinang Kampai Airport. The city is an important transport and trade centre, both regionally and internationally, especially for traffic to and from Malaysia. The region is rich in oil.
Indragiri Hilir is the most eastern regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency has an area of 13,136.14 km2 and had a population of 661,779 at the 2010 census and 654,909 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 695,571. The administrative centre of the regency is the town of Tembilahan.
Indragiri Hulu is a landlocked regency (kabupaten) of Riau, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The original regency was split in two on 4 October 1999, with the western half being created as a separate Kuantan Singingi Regency. The regency now has an area of 8,198.71 km2 and had a population of 363,442 at the 2010 census, 408,704 at the 2015 census and 444,548 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 472,799. The administrative seat of the regency is located at the town of Rengat.
Kampar is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province of Indonesia. The regency formerly included a much larger part of Riau Province, but on 4 October 1999 the western districts were split off to form a separate Rokan Hulu Regency, and the eastern districts were split off to form a new Pelalawan Regency. It now has an area of 12,481 km2 and had a population of 688,204 at the 2010 Census, and 841,332 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 860,379. The administrative centre of the regency is located at the town of Bangkinang.
Kuantan Singingi is an inland regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 from what had been the western half of Indragiri Hulu Regency. It has an area of 7,656.03 km2 and had a population of 292,116 at the 2010 Census and 334,943 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 356,246. The seat of the regency is the town of Teluk Kuantan.
Rokan Hilir is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, on Sumatra island, Indonesia. It was formed on 4 October 1999 from districts which had previously been the northwestern part of Bengkalis Regency. It occupies the lower part of the catchment area of the Rokan River, and has an area of 8,851.59 km2. It had a population of 553,216 at the 2010 census and 637,161 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 662,546. The administrative centre of the Rokan Hilir Regency is located at the town of Bagansiapiapi.
South Hulu Sungai Regency is one of the regencies (kabupaten) in South Kalimantan province, Indonesia. It had an area of 1,804.94 km2, and a population of 212,485 at the 2010 Census and 228,006 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 237.319. The capital of the regency is the town of Kandangan, which is famous for its culinary ketupat Kandangan.
Central Hulu Sungai Regency is one of the regencies in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan. The area is 1,770.77 km2 and the population was 243,460 at the 2010 Census and 258,721 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 268,360. The administrative centre is the town of Barabai.
Tabalong Regency is the most northerly of the regencies in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan, on Borneo Island. It was created on 14 July 1965 by splitting off the former northern districts of North Hulu Sungai Regency. It has a land area of 3,553.36 km2, and had a population at the 2010 Census of 218,620 and 253,305 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 262,631. The administrative capital is the town of Tanjung. The Regency's motto is "Saraba Kawa".
Tanah Bumbu is one of the regencies in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan. It was formerly part of Kotabaru Regency, but was split off on 25 February 2003 to form a separate regency, following dissatisfaction on the Kalimantan mainland territories with administration from Laut Island. It covers an area of 4,890.3 km2 and had a population of 267,929 at the 2010 Census and 322,646 at the 2020 Census; the latest official estimate is 343,741. The regency's capital is the town of Batulicin.
Bintan Regency is an administrative area in the Riau Islands Province of Indonesia. Bintan Regency includes all of Bintan Island and also includes many outlying islands including the Tambelan Archipelago and Badas Islands situated between Bintan and West Kalimantan; altogether there are 273 islands comprising the regency.
Rupat is an island in the Strait of Malacca, and forms part of Bengkalis Regency within Riau, Indonesia. It lies just off the eastern coast of Sumatra, across from Dumai city, from which it is separated by the Rupat Strait. Its area is 1,704.98 km2 (658.30 sq mi). The island is sparsely populated, with a population density of 36 per km2. Rupat was one of thousands of abandoned islands, but its population is growing yearly, which has made the government expand the area for the settlement.
Batanghari is a regency of Jambi Province in Sumatra, Indonesia. It originally covered a wider area, but on 4 October 1999 this was split between a new Muaro Jambi Regency in the east and a reduced Batang Hari Regency in the west, which now covers an area of 5,804.83 km2. It had a population of 241,334 at the 2010 census and 301,700 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 312,279. The administrative capital is the town of Muara Bulian(Bulian Estuary or Bulian Delta).
The Karimun Regency is located in the Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. Besides the central island of Great Karimun, the regency also includes the island of Kundur and over 240 lesser islands. The district covers a land area of 1,339.9 km2 and a sea area of 6,460 km2, and its population was 212,561 at the 2010 census and 253,457 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 270,121.
Selat Panjang is the capital of Kepulauan Meranti Regency, which is part of the province of Riau in Indonesia. The regency is a new regency in Riau province which was established on 19 December 2008 after being separated from Bengkalis Regency. The city is located on Tebing Tinggi Island, which is separated by a narrow channel from Sumatra, and across the Strait of Malacca from Singapore.
The Sultanate of Siak Sri Indrapura, often called Sultanate of Siak, was a kingdom that was located in present-day Siak Regency, and nearby other regions from 1722 to 1949. It was founded by Raja Kecil, who had close relations with the Johor Sultanate, after he failed to seize the Johor throne. The polity expanded in the 18th century to encompass much of eastern Sumatra as it brought various communities under its control through warfare and control of trade between the interior of Sumatra and the Malacca Strait. The Dutch colonial state signed a series of treaties with the Siak rulers in the 19th century, which reduced the area of state influence to the Siak River. For the remainder of the Dutch colonial era, it operated as an independent state with Dutch advisors. After Indonesia's Independence was proclaimed on 17 August 1945, the last sultan of Siak, Sultan Syarif Kasim II, declared his kingdom to join the Republic of Indonesia.
Meranti Islands is an archipelago, most of which forms a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 19 December 2008 by the separating of these large islands from the mainly mainland regency of Bengkalis. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang, and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands, but does not include Bengkalis Island to the north, which is geographically part of the archipelago but remains within Bengkalis Regency. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 4,769.53 km2 and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 211,611.
West Tanjung Jabung Regency is a regency of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the then Tanjung Jabung Regency into eastern and western halves. The western regency now has an area of 5,009.82 km2 and had a population of 278,741 as at the 2010 census and 317,498 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 331,058. The regency seat is the town of Kuala Tungkal, a port at the mouth of the Tungkal River.
