Simalungun Regency is a regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. Its seat was formerly at Pematangsiantar, but this city was under Law No.15 of 10 March 1986 was separated from the Regency and made into an independent city (kota), although it remains geographically surrounded by the regency, whose new administrative seat is at Raya, while the regency's two most populous districts are Bandar and Siantar. The regency now covers an area of 4,372.5 square kilometres, and at the 2010 census it had a population of 817,720; [2] at the 2020 Census this had risen to 990,246, of whom 497,314 were males and 492,932 were females; [3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,035,920 - comprising 521,262 males and 514,658 females. The principal group of inhabitants of the Regency (and of Pematangsiantar city, an enclave within the regency) are the Simalungun people, a sub-group of the Batak people. Their language (Simalungun language) is an Austronesian language.
The regent of Simalungun is Radiapoh Hasiholan Sinaga, SH, who was elected as Regent of Simalungun on Pilkada (election of regional head) 2020, and took office on 21 April 2021.
The regency in 2010 was divided administratively into thirty-one districts (kecamatan), but in 2017 a 32nd district - Dolog Masagal - was created. These are tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census [2] and 2020 Census, [3] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023. [1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages in each district (totaling 386 rural desa and 27 urban kelurahan), and its post code.

Six southern districts border directly on the north coast of Lake Toba; from west to east, these are Pematang Silimakuta, Silimakuta, Haranggaol Horison, Dolok Pardamean, Pematang Sidamanik, and Girsang Sipangan Bolon.
Dayang Bandir and Sandean Raja is a folk story from Simalungun.
Local people mention it as Bukit Kapur Tinggi Raja, but some people have also called it "Kawah Putih" (White Crater), the same name as Kawah Putih in West Java. The crater is located in Dolok Tinggi Raja Village, 90 kilometres from Medan or 3 to 4 hours drive by motorcycle on the route Medan-Lubuk Pakam-Galang-Bangun Purba-Dolok Tinggi Raja. [4]
Parapat is a small town located on the shore of Lake Toba. This place is known for tourism, and ferry services to Samosir Island are also available.
North Sumatra, also called North Sumatra Province, is a province of Indonesia located in the northern part of the island of Sumatra, just south of Aceh. Its capital and largest city is Medan on the east coast of the island. It is bordered by Aceh on the northwest and Riau and West Sumatra on the southeast, by coastlines located on the Indian Ocean to the west, and by the Strait of Malacca to the east.
Bengkalis Regency is a regency of Indonesia in Riau Province. The regency was originally established in 1956 and then included most of the northern part of the province, but on 4 October 1999 it was divided up, with most of the territory being split off to form the new Rokan Hilir Regency, Siak Regency and the city of Dumai. On 19 December 2008 a further five districts were removed to create the new Meranti Islands Regency, leaving eight districts in the Bengkalis Regency. These eight districts has increased since 2010 to eleven by the splitting of existing districts on the Sumatran mainland.
Deli Serdang is a regency in the Indonesian province of North Sumatra. It surrounds the city of Medan, and also borders to the west the city of Binjai, which is effectively a bedroom community for Medan. The entire regency lies within the Medan metropolitan area. It occupies an area of 2,502.16 km2. The capital of the district is Lubuk Pakam, which is located approximately 30 km east of Medan. The national census of 2000 recorded 1,573,987 people, but by 2010 the regency's population increased by 13.76% to 1,790,431, and at the 2020 Census the total was 1,931,441. The official estimate as at mid 2023 was 2,015,429. Kualanamu International Airport is located in this regency, 23 kilometres (14 mi) east of downtown Medan.
Bandung Regency is an administrative landlocked regency located to the south, southeast, east and northeast of the city of Bandung. The northern parts of the Bandung Regency are effectively part of Greater Bandung, with the southern third being less urbanized and jutting upwards from the Valley, though not as sharply as the mountain range to the immediate north of Bandung. The Regency is part of the Indonesian province of West Java, and is situated about 75 miles southeast of Jakarta. The town of Soreang is the regency seat.
Pematangsiantar, and also known as the City of Pematangsiantar, is an independent city in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia, surrounded by, but not part of, the Simalungun Regency, making Pematangsiantar an enclave within Simalungun Regency. Pematangsiantar formerly had the status of a second-level district and was the administrative centre of the surrounding Regency, but in 1986 it was elevated to Kota (City) and separated from the Regency.
Karo Regency is a landlocked regency of North Sumatra Province of Indonesia, situated in the Barisan Mountains. The regency, which was established on 7 November 1956, covers an area of 2,127.25 square kilometres (821.34 sq mi) and according to the 2010 census it had a population of 350,479, increasing to 404,998 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid-2023 was 420,799, comprising 208,600 males and 212,200 females. 60.99% of the regency is forested. Its regency seat is the town of Kabanjahe. The Batak Karo language is spoken in the regency, as well as the Indonesian language. It borders Southeast Aceh Regency in Aceh to the west, Deli Serdang Regency and Langkat Regency to the north, Dairi Regency and Toba Samosir Regency to the south, and Deli Serdang Regency and Simalungun Regency to the east.
Rokan Hilir is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, on Sumatra island, Indonesia. It was formed on 4 October 1999 from districts which had previously been the northwestern part of Bengkalis Regency. It occupies the lower part of the catchment area of the Rokan River, and has an area of 8,851.59 km2. It had a population of 553,216 at the 2010 census and 637,161 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 662,546. The administrative centre of the Rokan Hilir Regency is located at the town of Bagansiapiapi.
Tebing Tinggi Deli, officially Tebing Tinggi City, or more commonly simply Tebing Tinggi is a city near the eastern coast of North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. It has an area of 38.44 km2 and a population at the 2010 Census of 145,180, which grew to 172,838 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 178,914. Tebing Tinggi is an enclave within Serdang Bedagai Regency, which surrounds it on all sides, and contains a kecamatan (district) bordering the city which is also named Tebing Tinggi.
Tapin Regency is one of regencies in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan. The regency was created on 14 July 1965 by splitting off the districts which had until then comprised the southern part of South Hulu Sungai Regency. The regency's motto is "Ruhui Rahayu", and this is also shared by another Indonesian province. It covers an area of 2,174.95 km2 and had a population of 167,877 at the 2010 Census and 189,475 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 197,893. The administrative centre of the regency is at the town of Rantau.
Percut Sei Tuan is an administrative district (kecamatan) of Deli Serdang Regency in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Humbang Hasundutan Regency is a landlocked regency in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. In the east of the regency, Baktiraja District stretches along a short part of the southern shore of Lake Toba in North Sumatra. The regency covers an area of 2,502.71 square kilometres (966.30 sq mi), and it had a population of 171,650 at the 2010 census and 197,751 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 204,700. Its seat is the town of Dolok Sanggul. To the north is Samosir Regency and Pakpak Bharat Regency, to the east is North Tapanuli Regency, and to the west and south is Central Tapanuli Regency, and beyond the latter the Indian Ocean.
Langkat Regency is the northernmost regency of North Sumatra Province in Indonesia. Its administrative centre is the town of Stabat. It has a land area of 6,263.29 km2 and its population was 967,535 at the 2010 Census and 1,030,202 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,066,711 - comprising 538,822 males and 527,889 females. Its population is roughly equivalent to that of Djibouti.
Samosir Regency is an inland regency in North Sumatra. It was created on 18 December 2003 by splitting away the western districts of the former Toba Samosir Regency. The regency covers a land area of 1,444.25 square kilometres, including the whole of Samosir Island in the inland sea of Lake Toba. It had a population of 119,653 at the 2010 census and 136,441 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate for mid 2023 was 141,333 - comprising 70,648 males and 70,685 females. Its administrative seat is the town of Pangururan on the west coast of Samosir Island.
Serdang Bedagai Regency is a regency on the east coast of North Sumatra Province of Indonesia, facing Malaysia, with 95 km of coastline and covering an area of 1,904.37 square kilometres, divided into seventeen districts (kecamatan), in turn subdivided into 243 villages. Its administrative centre is the town of Sei Rampah. The regency surrounds the independent city of Tebing Tinggi, and also contains a district (kecamatan) by the same name. The name “Serdang Bedagai” was derived from the two Sultanates which formerly existed in the Region; they were Serdang Sultanate and Padang Bedagai Sultanate. The population was 592,922 at the 2010 Census, while the 2020 Census produced a total of 657,490; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 685,074.
Toba Regency is a landlocked regency in North Sumatra. Its seat is Balige. The regency covers an area of 2,021.8 square kilometres; it had a population of 173,129 at the 2010 census and 206,199 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 213,850. Although landlocked, the regency includes the eastern shore of the vast inland Lake Toba.
Meranti Islands is an archipelago, most of which forms a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 19 December 2008 by the separating of these large islands from the mainly mainland regency of Bengkalis. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang, and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands, but does not include Bengkalis Island to the north, which is geographically part of the archipelago but remains within Bengkalis Regency. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 4,769.53 km2 and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 211,611.
Merangin Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of Jambi Province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the former Sarolangun Bangko Regency into a new Sarolangun Regency in the east and this Merangin Regency in the west. The regency covers an area of 7,679.0 km2, and had a population of 333,206 at the 2010 census and 354,052 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 368,389 - comprising 187,026 males and 181,363 females. The administrative capital is the town of Bangko.
Ogan Komering Ilir Regency is a regency of South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. It takes its name from the Ogan River and the Komering River, which are the two main rivers that drain the area. The name Ilir means downstream. The administrative centre is the town of Kayu Agung. The regency borders Banyuasin Regency to the northwest, Bangka Strait, and the Java Sea to the east, Lampung Province to the south, and Palembang city, Ogan Ilir Regency, and East Ogan Komering Ulu Regency to the west.
Central Lampung Regency is a regency of the province of Lampung, on Sumatra, Indonesia. On 20 April 1999, two areas were separated from the original regency - the southeastern portion was split off to form a separate East Lampung Regency, while the town of Metro was created as an independent city. The reduced regency has an area of 4,559.57 km2 and had a population of 1,170,048 people at the 2010 census and 1,460,045 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,508,331. The regency seat is the town of Gunung Sugih.
