North Tapanuli Regency (Tapanuli Utara - in Indonesian, "utara" means "north") is a landlocked regency in North Sumatra province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Its capital is Tarutung. The regency covers an area of 3,793.71 square kilometres and it had a population of 278,897 at the 2010 Census [2] and 312,758 at the 2020 Census; [3] the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 323,102. [1]

The regency is divided into fifteen districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census [2] and the 2020 Census, [3] together with the official estimates as of mid-2022. [4] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages in each district (totalling 241 rural desa and 11 urban kelurahan), and its postcode.

(c) Muara District is a northern near-exclave of the regency, mainly situated on the southern shore of Lake Toba and connected to Siborongborong District by a narrow strip of land.
It includes the island of Pulau Sibandang (12 km2 in area, with 2,357 inhabitants in 2020), which is situated in the lake.

Soda Pond, or Aek Rara is located at the bottom of Parbubu I Hill village. The pond's natural spring water generates bubbles and a soda aroma can be smelled. It is safe for swimming, but the use of goggles is recommended. The locals regularly use the water from the pond to water nearby rice paddy fields. [5]

It was created on 26 June 1959 from the trifurcation of the original Hulu Sungai Regency and formerly covered a much larger area in the north of the province, but on 14 July 1965 the northern districts were split off to create a separate Tabalong Regency, and on 25 February 2003 the eastern districts were split off to create a separate Balangan Regency. It now has an area of 907.49 km2, and had a population of 209,246 at the 2010 Census and 226,727 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2022 was 231,290. The capital of the regency is the town of Amuntai.

North Labuhanbatu Regency is a regency of North Sumatra, Indonesia, created on 21 July 2008 by being carved out of the north-western districts of the existing Labuhanbatu Regency, which until 2008 covered an area of 9,703 square kilometres and had a population of 840,382 according to the 2000 census. 60.99% of the regency is forested. The new North Labuhanbatu Regency covers 3,545.8 square kilometres and had a population of 331,660 at the 2010 Census, rising to 381,994 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 401,863 . The Kualuh River is located in this regency. The administrative centre of the regency is at the town of Aek Kanopan.

The capital lies at Panyabungan. The Regency was formerly a part of South Tapanuli Regency until it was created as a separate regency on 23 November 1998.
