Binjai, formally Kota Binjai, is an independent city in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia, bordered by Deli Serdang Regency to the east and Langkat Regency to the west. Binjai is connected to Medan, about 22 km to the east, by the Sumatra highway that goes to Banda Aceh, and effectively forms a part of Greater Medan. The city's population was 181,904 in the 1990 Census, 224,516 in the 2000 Census, 246,154 in the 2010 Census, and 291,842 in the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 303,272, comprising 151,627 males and 151,645 females. In mid-2023, a further 49,217 inhabitants lived in Binjai District of Langkat Regency, outside the city limits but immediately north of the city.
Bengkalis Regency is a regency of Indonesia in Riau Province. The regency was originally established in 1956 and then included most of the northern part of the province, but on 4 October 1999 it was divided up, with most of the territory being split off to form the new Rokan Hilir Regency, Siak Regency and the city of Dumai. On 19 December 2008 a further five districts were removed to create the new Meranti Islands Regency, leaving eight districts in the Bengkalis Regency. These eight districts has increased since 2010 to eleven by the splitting of existing districts on the Sumatran mainland.
Jambi is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Jambi. Located on the island of Sumatra, the city is a busy port on the Batang Hari River and an oil- and rubber-producing centre. The city is located 26 km (16 mi) from the ruins of Muaro Jambi Temple Compounds, an important city in the ancient Srivijaya kingdom.
Tanjungbalai, also colloquially written as Tanjung Balai, is a city in North Sumatra province, Indonesia, on the estuary of the Asahan River. It has an area of 60.52 square kilometers (23.37 sq mi) and the sixth largest kota (urban) population in North Sumatra with 154,445 inhabitants in the 2010 census and 176,027 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 183,170 - comprising 92,715 males and 90,455 females. The town has a ferry terminal with services to Port Klang, Malaysia, and the city-island of Singapore.
Langsa, is a city in Aceh, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. Apart from a small seacoast to the northeast, it borders Manyak Payed District of Aceh Tamiang Regency to the east and is otherwise surrounded by Birem Bayeun District of Aceh Timur Regency to the north, west and south. The city covers an area of 239.83 square kilometres and had a population of 148,945 at the 2010 Census ; this grew to 185,971 at the 2020 Census, and the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 194,730, comprising 97,579 males and 97,151 females.
Pagar Alam, is a city in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It was formerly part of Lahat Regency, from which it was separated as an independent city on 21 June 2001; before being established as an independent city, Pagar Alam was an administrative city within Lahat Regency. It has an area of 633.66 km2 and a population of 126,181 at the 2010 Census and 143,844 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 150,881.
Serang is a city in Lampung province and was formerly also the administrative center of Serang Regency in Indonesia. The city is located towards the north of Lampung province, on the island of Java; the north part of the city contains the coast zone facing onto Banten Bay, and includes the historical site of Old Banten, after which the province is named. Before Banten province was formed in 2000, Serang city was part of West Java province.
Rangsang is an island of the Meranti Islands Regency of Riau Province in the Strait of Malacca, Sumatra, Indonesia. Administratively, it consists of the three districts (kecamatan) of Rangsang, Rangsang Pesisir and Rangsang Barat. The island had a population of 51,452 at the 2010 Census and 58,464 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 60,900. It is just north of Tebing Tinggi Island, about 24 kilometres (15 mi) south-west of Great Karimun island and 22 kilometres (14 mi) west of Kundur Island.
Tebing Tinggi Island is an island off the north east coast of Riau Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, located in the Strait of Malacca. It is located in the Meranti Islands Regency, and is directly east of Padang Island and directly south of Rangsang Island. The area is 1,379.31 km2.
Central Bengkulu Regency is a regency of Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. It is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra, and lies immediately to the north and the east of the adjacent city of Bengkulu. It was formed on 24 June 2008 by being split away from the neighbouring North Bengkulu Regency. It covers an area of 1,223.94 km2 and had a population of 98,333 at the 2010 census and 116,706 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 121,139 - comprising 62,078 males and 59,061 females. the administrative centre is at the town of Karang Tinggi.
Rantauprapat is a city in North Sumatra province of Indonesia and it is the seat (capital) of Labuhan Batu Regency. Rantauprapat is also a name of village within the district of Rantau Utara. Padang Lawas is a regency in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia. It covers an area of 3,912.18 km2, and had a population of 226,807 at the 2010 Census and 261,011 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 275,648 - comprising 138,506 males and 137,142 females. Its administrative seat is the town of Sibuhuan. Padang Lawas Regency was created on 17 July 2007 from southeastern parts of the South Tapanuli Regency. It is the only regency in this province that borders two other provinces, West Sumatra and Riau.
Pakpak Bharat Regency is a landlocked regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. It was created on 25 February 2003 from the southern districts of Dairi Regency. The regency covers an area of 1,365.6 square kilometres and it had a population of 40,481 at the 2010 census and 52,351 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 55,172 - comprising 27,890 males and 27,282 females. Its seat is the town of Salak. It is the least populated regency in North Sumatra; its population is roughly the same as Greenland, the island with the lowest population density in the world.
Serdang Bedagai Regency is a regency on the east coast of North Sumatra Province of Indonesia, facing Malaysia, with 95 km of coastline and covering an area of 1,900.22 square kilometres, divided into seventeen districts (kecamatan), in turn subdivided into 243 villages or subdistricts. Its administrative centre is the town of Sei Rampah. The regency surrounds the independent city of Tebing Tinggi, and also contains a district (kecamatan) by the same name. The name “Serdang Bedagai” was derived from the two Sultanates which formerly existed in the Region; they were Serdang Sultanate and Padang Bedagai Sultanate. The population was 592,922 at the 2010 Census, while the 2020 Census produced a total of 657,490; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 682,918.
Simalungun Regency is a regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. Its seat was formerly at Pematangsiantar, but this city was under Law No.15 of 10 March 1986 was separated from the Regency and made into an independent city (kota), although it remains geographically surrounded by the regency, whose new administrative seat is at Raya, while the regency's two most populous districts are Bandar and Siantar. The regency now covers an area of 4,372.5 square kilometres, and at the 2010 census it had a population of 817,720; at the 2020 Census this had risen to 990,246, of whom 497,314 were males and 492,932 were females; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,035,920 - comprising 521,262 males and 514,658 females.
Meranti Islands is an archipelago, most of which forms a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 19 December 2008 by the separating of these large islands from the mainly mainland regency of Bengkalis. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang, and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands, but does not include Bengkalis Island to the north, which is geographically part of the archipelago but remains within Bengkalis Regency. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 3,623.93 km2 and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 211,771.
Sungai Penuh is a city in Indonesia, in western Jambi province, on the island of Sumatra. It is an enclave within Kerinci Regency, of which it was formerly part but from which it became administratively separate on 24 June 2008. The city, whose name means "Penuh River", is also known as Siulak. It covers an area of 391.50 km2 and had a population of 82,293 at the 2010 Census and 96,610 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 99,771.
Tebo Regency is a regency of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra, and was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the former Bungo Tebo Regency into a new Bungo Regency in the west and this Tebo Regency in the east. The Tebo regency has an area of 6,461 km² and had a population of 297,735 at the 2010 Census and 337,669 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 350,761. The regency seat is at the town of Muara Tebo.
Empat Lawang Regency is a regency of South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. It was created on 2 January 2007 from what had been formerly the western districts of Lahat Regency. It covers an area of 2,256.44 km² and had a population of 221,176 at the 2010 Census and 333,622 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 336,694. The regency seat is at the town of Tebing Tinggi.
Tebing Tinggi is a town and administrative district (kecamatan) in Empat Lawang Regency, of South Sumatra province of Indonesia and it is the seat (capital) of Empat Lawang Regency. The total area of Tebing Tinggi District is 362.93 km2 (140.13 sq mi). and it had a population of 71,060 according to the official estimate as at mid 2023.
