The Cardinals played their home games at Vincent–Beck Stadium and were led by fifth–year head coach Will Davis. They were members of the Southland Conference. This was Lamar's final year in the Southland as they will be moving to the Western Athletic Conference for the 2022 season.

The Cardinals compiled a 7–8 overall record prior to season cancellation. On March 12, the Southland Conference announced a suspension of Spring sports through March 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
