The result against North American University on September 16 was the largest victory margin in the team's history. [10] The game against North American University is not included in the Gulf South Conference standings because it was classed as an exhibition game and was not countable due to NCAA policies. [11]

This was the first time that the team had won five games in a row at the start of a season. [12] [13]

The North Alabama Lions football program represents the University of North Alabama (UNA) in college football as the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level as a member of the United Athletic Conference (UAC). They represented the division in the SEC Championship Game where they defeated Eastern Division champion Georgia 42–10 be crowned SEC champions. Will Hall is an American football coach. He was the head coach of The University of Southern Mississippi. Hall served as the head football coach at the University of West Alabama from 2011 to 2013 and at the University of West Georgia 2014 to 2016. He also served as offensive coordinator for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2017. He grew up in Mississippi and attended the University of North Alabama where he played quarterback from 2002 to 2003. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2003. He began his coaching career in 2004 and held assistant coaching positions at Presbyterian, Henderson State, Southwest Baptist, Arkansas-Monticello and West Alabama.

Brett Gilliland is an American football coach. He is the head football coach for the University of West Alabama; a position he has held since 2014. Previously Gilliland played quarterback for the West Alabama Tigers from 2000 to 2003 where he set several school records. He began his coaching career in 2004 and held assistant coaching positions at West Alabama, Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State. Gilliland was announced as West Alabama's 21st head coach on December 9, 2013.
