Municipal election for Biratnagar took place on 13 May 2022, with all 122 positions up for election across 19 wards. [1] [2] The electorate elected a mayor, a deputy mayor, 19 ward chairs and 76 ward members. An indirect election will also be held to elect five female members and an additional three female members from the Dalit and minority community to the municipal executive. [3]
Nagesh Koirala from Nepali Congress was elected as the new mayor of Metropolitan city. [4]
The first election after the city was declared as a metropolitan city was held in 2017. [5] Electors in each ward elect a ward chair and four ward members, out of which two must be female and one of the two must belong to the Dalit community. [6]
Bhim Parajuli from Nepali Congress was elected as the first mayor of the metropolitan city in the previous election. [7]
In accordance with the decision of central leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), People's Socialist Party, CPN (Unified Socialist) and Rastriya Janamorcha, an alliance was created to contest local elections in some local units. In Biratnagar, Nagesh Koirala from Nepali Congress was the candidate for mayor from the alliance and Amrendra Yadav from People's Socialist party was the candidate for deputy mayor. [8]

The Nepali Congress is the oldest social democratic political party in Nepal and the largest party in the country. The party has 870,106 members as of the party's 14th general convention in December 2021, making it the largest party by membership in Nepal. In June 2023, the party started online membership since the emergence of youth leaders in vital posts to attract youths to the party. The party is led by former prime minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba since the party's thirteenth general convention in 2016. The party won 89 seats in the 2022 general election and is currently the largest parliamentary group in the House of Representatives.
Biratnagar is a metropolitan city in Nepal, which serves as the capital of Koshi Province. With a Metropolitan Urban Agglomeration population of 244,750 as per the 2021 census, it is the largest city and fastest growing city in the province and also the headquarters of Morang district. As per the preliminary report of 2022 Nepal census, Biratnagar Metropolitan has an estimated city population of 243,927 excluding the suburban areas which are now very well connected to the old town. It is the administrative center of the Greater Birat Development Area which incorporates the cities of Biratnagar and its suburbs and towns of-Itahari-Gothgau-Biratchowk-Dharan primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal, with an estimated total urban agglomerated population of 804,300 people in 159,332 households including the town of Ithari. Biratnagar is located 399 km (248 mi) east of the capital, Kathmandu, and 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the bordering town of Jogbani in the Indian state of Bihar. It is one of the major entry point in Nepal for Businessmen as well as Tourists who come to visit Nepal for various purposes.
Municipal election for Kathmandu, capital of Nepal was held on May 14, 2017, for the position of Mayor, a Deputy Mayor, 32 Ward Chairmen and Ward Members. All positions are for a period of 5 years. A secondary election is to be held for municipal executive which will elect 5 women from the elected ward members and 3 members who must be from the Dalit and minority community. The electorate for this election will the 159 members chosen direct election.
National Assembly elections were held in Nepal on 26 January 2022 in order to elect 19 of the 20 retiring Class II members of the National Assembly, the upper house of the Federal Parliament of Nepal. Members of the National Assembly are elected through indirect ballot and serve six year terms with one third of the members retiring every two years. However, the retiring members served only four year terms due to the entire house being elected in 2018 when a lottery was held to determine two, four and six year term members.

Harka Raj Sampang Rai is a Nepalese politician and the current mayor of Dharan. Rai is also a social activist. He has been elected as an independent candidate for the post Mayor, having 'Walking stick/Lauro' as the electoral symbol via the 2022 local election. He defeated Nepali Congress candidate Kishore Rai by receiving 20,821 votes.
Triloki Prasad is a Nepalese politician. He is a member of Provincial Assembly of Madhesh Province from CPN. Prasad, a resident of Kolhabi, was elected via 2017 Nepalese provincial elections from Bara 1(A).
The first Koshi Provincial Assembly was elected by the 2017 provincial elections. 93 members were elected to the assembly, 56 of whom were elected through direct elections and 37 of whom were elected through the party list proportional representation system. The term of the assembly started on 5 February 2018 and ended in September 2022. Sher Dhan Rai and Bhim Acharya served as chief ministers from CPN and Rajendra Kumar Rai served as chief minister from CPN during the term of the assembly. Pradeep Kumar Bhandari served as the speaker of the assembly and Saraswati Pokharel served as deputy speaker.
