The 2022 Donegal Senior Football Championship was the 100th official edition of Donegal GAA's premier Gaelic football tournament for senior graded clubs in County Donegal. 16 teams competed, with the winner representing Donegal in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship.
St Eunan's were the defending champions after they defeated Naomh Conaill in the 2021 final.
Naomh Conaill advanced again, to the 2022 final, where they won this time, but in controversial circumstances, and by one point, after St Eunan's player Shane O'Donnell was sent off for patting Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí. [4] [5]

The draw was held on Tuesday evening, 21 June, at the Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town. [7] [8] The sixteen clubs were separated into two groups of eight. [7] Four round-robin games for all clubs was the format, then the group standings amalgamated to decide on the competition's quarter-finalists. [7] The first games were scheduled for 13–14 August, a weekend. [7]

The draw determined the first two sets of fixtures; the third and fourth sets of fixtures of the round-robin stage were not determined until the second and third rounds had concluded. [7]
Round 3: On 27 August, St Eunan's played Cloich Cheann Fhaola, [37] while Four Masters played Réalt na Mara. [38] On 28 August, Na Cealla Beaga played Milford, [39] [40] Naomh Conaill played St Michael's, [41] [42] Cill Chartha played Ard an Rátha, [43] [44] Glenswilly played Glenfin, [45] Gaoth Dobhair played Seán MacCumhaills, [46] and Aodh Ruadh played St Naul's. Round 4: All eight fixtures were played on 4 September. Na Cealla Beaga played Cloich Cheann Fhaola. [6] [48] Glenswilly played Ard an Rátha. [49] [50] Naomh Conaill played Gaoth Dobhair. [51] St Michael's played St Naul's, [52] with the former securing the last available place in the quarter-finals. [53] Glenfin played Four Masters. [54] [55] St Eunan's played Seán MacCumhaills and finished top of the league stage on points difference, while Aodh Ruadh played Milford and Cill Chartha played Réalt na Mara. [56]
The first quarter-final [57] ended with Cill Chartha defeating Na Cealla Beaga 1–14 to 1–7 at Tír Chonaill Park. [58] [59] [60]
St Eunan's had a 16-point (2–15 to 0–5) win against St Michael's at Davy Brennan Memorial Park. [57] [61] [62]
The other two quarter-finals saw Gaoth Dobhair emerge with a one-point (0–8 to 0–7) win against Aodh Ruadh at Fintra, [57] [63] while Naomh Conaill defeated Glenswilly by 2–10 to 0–10 at O'Donnell Park. [57] [64]
A draw was held to determine the semi-final pairings. [65]
The first semi-final — between Cill Chartha and St Eunan's — was scheduled for 20:00 on Saturday 24 September at MacCumhaill Park, and to be streamed live (pay-per-view) on Donegal GAA TV, while the second semi-final — between Gaoth Dobhair and Naomh Conaill — was scheduled for 16:00 on Sunday 25 September also at MacCumhaill Park, and also to be streamed live (pay-per-view) on Donegal GAA TV. [66] However, the first semi-final was postponed until the following weekend, due to bereavements (the father and sister of Brendan Devenney had both died, suddenly, and separately). [67]
Naomh Conaill defeated Gaoth Dobhair by 0–13 to 1–8 in what was to have been the second semi-final, but ended up being the first played. [68] St Eunan's defeated Cill Chartha by 1–13 to 1–11 in the other semi-final, with both victors qualifying for the 2022 championship final. [69]
This was Naomh Conaill's sixth consecutive appearance in the final. [70] The club won a sixth title. [1]
Originally scheduled for 9 October 2022, the game was called off in the aftermath of the Creeslough explosion. [71]

Both semi-finals were held on Sunday 25 September. [66] Ard an Rátha v St Naul's was played at Eamonn O'Broinn Memorial Park from 13:00, and streamed live (pay-per-view) on Donegal GAA TV; Milford v Réalt na Mara was played at Páirc Aodh Rua from 13:30, and streamed live (and available for free) on Donegal Facebook. The two losing semi-finalists were St Naul's (defeated by 3–6 to 0–9) and Réalt na Mara (defeated by 4–16 to 3–16, after extra time). [73]
St Naul's — achieving a first win in the 2022 SFC — defeated Réalt na Mara by 0–13 to 1–6 in the play-off final at Tírconaill Park, thus relegating Réalt na Mara to the 2023 Intermediate Championship. [2]
On 12 December 2022, Brendan McDyer was named as the recipient of the annual Gradam Shéamuis Mhic Géidigh. [74] [75] RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta announced the decision. [76] McDyer was not expecting to be selected. [77] He received the award at an official function in Letterkenny on the evening of 14 December 2022. [78] [79]

The Donegal Senior Football Championship is an annual football competition organised by Donegal GAA and contested by the highest-level clubs, to determine the best team in County Donegal. Since 2016, it has been known as Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Donegal SFC after its headline sponsor.

Naomh Conaill CLCG is a GAA club for the Glenties parish in south-west County Donegal. As well as the town of Glenties, the club also covers the area to the village of Fintown and the areas of Kilraine, The Glen and Maas down to the Gweebara Bridge. Much of this area lies within the Donegal Gaeltacht area.
Aodh Ruadh CLG are a GAA club based in the town of Ballyshannon in County Donegal.
St Michael's is a GAA club based in Creeslough/Dunfanaghy in County Donegal. Located in the north of the county, the club is affected by rural issues such as low population and emigration; despite this they play at the top level in the Donegal Senior Football Championship and opened a new clubhouse in 2010. The club colours are red and white.
Marty Boyle is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for Naomh Conaill and also, formerly, for the Donegal county team. He played for his county during Jim McGuinness's first spell as manager.

It was level when St Eunan's midfielder Kevin Kealy prodded to the net in the 50th minute, but man of the match Thompson slammed over immediately as if to throw down a marker.
O'Donnell followed that up with a pat on Mac Ceallabhuí and, to the surprise of everyone in MacCumhaill Park, was sent off by referee Mark Dorrian.
Kilcar claimed a seven point victory over Killybegs in the opening quarter final of the weekend, 1–14 to 1–07.
Both sides had a tough route to this stage but Danny O'Donnell mentions how both sides will have been delighted with the draw for the semi-final.
Tomorrow's Donegal Senior Football final and all other championship games in the county have been postponed this weekend following yesterday's tragedy in Creeslough. St Eunan's and Naomh Conaill had been set to meet in tomorrow's decider and Donegal GAA say their prayers are with the community of Creeslough.
