The 2022 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship was an international under-18 basketball tournament that was held from 6 to 12 June 2022 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. [1] The twelfth edition of the biennial competition, this is also the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas in the 2023 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Hungary.

Contents

Hosts selection

On 9 May 2022, FIBA Americas has decided to grant Mexico the hosting rights for the FIBA U18 Americas Men's Championship. The city of Tijuana will host the event which will take place from June 6 to 12. [2] The tournament will be played again after the last edition held in 2018, since the 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the first time that Mexico will host the continental under-18 tournament.

The 2009 FIBA Americas Championship, later known as the FIBA AmeriCup, was the continental championship held by FIBA Americas, for North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. This FIBA AmeriCup championship served as a qualifying tournament for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey. Each of the top four finishers in the quarterfinal round robin qualified for the World Championship.

The 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for Women was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the women's basketball tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Men, later known as the FIBA AmeriCup, was the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Brazil. This FIBA AmeriCup tournament was held in Mexico City, Mexico. The tournament was won for the first time by the Venezuelan national basketball team. Venezuela and runner-up Argentina, qualified directly for the 2016 Olympics. They joined the FIBA Americas member, United States, who qualified for the Olympics by virtue of winning the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and they elected not to participate at this tournament; and FIBA Americas member, Brazil, who finished 9th in the tournament, but qualified for the Olympics as the host nation. Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, the next three highest-finishing teams, qualified for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, but none of them won their respective qualifying tournaments, therefore eliminating their 2016 Olympic hopes.

The 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Women, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament in Brazil. The champion qualified directly for the Olympics.

The 2016 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for Men was an international basketball competition that was held in Valdivia, Chile from July 19–23, 2016. It was the tenth edition of the championship, and was the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. Eight national teams from across the Americas, composed of men aged 19 and under, competed in the tournament. The United States won their fourth consecutive gold medal, and eighth overall, in this event by beating Canada in the final, 99–84.

The 2016 Men's Central American and Caribbean Basketball Championship, also known as 2016 Centrobasket, was the regional basketball championship of FIBA Americas for the Central American and Caribbean subzone. The top five teams automatically qualified for Division A of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification and for the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup, with the top seven qualifying for the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. The tournament was held in the city of Panama City from June 19 to June 25.
