On 20 August 2022, at least 35 people were killed in two separate bus crashes in Turkey. [1] Despite their similarities, they are reportedly unlinked. [2]

Gaziantep crash

In Gaziantep Province, a bus hit the scene of a road crash, crashing into cars and flipping over onto its side. [3] [ unreliable source ] 16 people were killed and 21 were injured. [2] The incident occurred on the highway between Gaziantep and Nizip. [4] Those killed included three firefighters, two paramedics and two journalists. [5]

Mardin crash

The second crash occurred in Derik in Mardin Province at another crash site. [6] According to Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca, the crash "occurred after the brakes gave out on a lorry, which hit a crowd". [2]

Investigation

Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag announced an investigation into the crashes. [7]

Twelve people were killed and at least twenty people were injured in the crash. All of the deaths and injuries occurred on the bus, which was pushed for tens of metres by the derailed train. The crash scene is near the popular ski resort of Polomka Bucnik, where the tourists were headed. The crash led to the third national day of mourning in Slovakia's history.

The Cottonwood bus crash occurred on the afternoon of February 19, 2008 that involved a school bus carrying 28 students from Lakeview Public Schools near Cottonwood in southwestern Minnesota, United States. The bus was struck on its passenger side by a minivan that drove through a stop sign, which caused the bus to fall over onto a pickup truck, killing four students and injuring 17.

In the morning of 10 July 2003, a Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) double-decker bus plunged off a bridge near the Ting Kau section of the Tuen Mun Road in Tsuen Wan, New Territories. The crash killed 21 people and injured 20.
