On 6 June 2022, a bus carrying 55 passengers as a part of a marriage ceremony fell into the 500-meter-deep gorge at night near Simdi village in Dhumakot area Uttarakhand. [1] [2] 32 people were killed and the rest were heavily injured in the crash. [3] The bus was being driven from Laldhang in Haridwar district to Birkhal block of Pauri district. [4]
Officials from Dhumkot police station came to the spot soon after the incident was reported. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the State Disaster Management Center soon after he was informed about the crash. SDRF and NDRF teams carried out rescue operations and the injured people were moved to the hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their condolences after the incident. [5] Dhami announced financial assistance of Rs 200,000 each for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

He was expelled from BJP and the Cabinet led by Pushkar Singh Dhami stating that he has indulged in anti-party activities and he is demanding ticket for his daughter in law (Anukriti) as well for the Uttarakhand Assembly Elections 2022. He later joined Congress in the presence of former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat.

He lost his seat in 2022 elections, but was re-elected as Chief Minister by BJP MLAs. He is the only Chief Minister of the state to assume a second consecutive term as CM, since its creation.

On 8 February 2024, violent clashes erupted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following the court-ordered demolition of an unauthorised madrasa situated in the Banbhoolpura area, predominantly inhabited by Muslims.
