<span class="mw-page-title-main">Panama</span> Country spanning North and South America

Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is a transcontinental country spanning the southern part of North America and the northern part of South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half the country's 4 million inhabitants.

Since 2008, there was only one functioning railroad in Panama, a number that increased to two in 2014 with the opening of the Panama Metro. The first one was the Panama Canal Railway, operated by the Panama Canal Railway Company, successor of Panama Railway, which provides passenger and freight service between Panama City and Colón. In 2014, Panama Metro started operation. Historically, there were also narrow gauge railroads in Chiriquí Province, which were abandoned in the late 20th century.

The Palacio de las Garzas is the governmental office and residence of the President of Panama. It receives its name because of herons roaming freely in the courtyard. The herons were first brought to the building in 1922, by the former president Belisario Porras Barahona, at the suggestion of friend and famed Panamanian poet Ricardo Miró.

Laurentino "Nito" Cortizo Cohen is a Panamanian politician who has served as the President of Panama since 2019. He was also a member of the National Assembly between 1994 and 2004, serving a year as chamber president.

The Naso Tjër Di Comarca is an indigenous region of Panama, located in the extreme northwest of the country, on the banks of the Teribe River and adjacent to the border between Costa Rica and Panama. The region is inhabited mainly by the Naso ethnic group, which is made up of about 5000 people. It was created on December 4, 2020 and has an area of 1,606.16 square kilometres (620.14 sq mi), of which 1468.63 km2 are protected areas of the La Amistad International Park and the Palo Seco Forest Reserve.

Felipe Alejandro Virzi López was a Panamanian politician. A member of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, he served as Second Vice President from 1994 to 1999. He died in the Santiago District on 3 February 2022, at the age of 79.

General elections are scheduled to be held in Panama on 5 May 2024. Due to constitutional term limits, incumbent president Laurentino Cortizo is ineligible for a second consecutive term.

In July 2022, protests broke out in Panama. They were reportedly triggered by rising inflation, corruption, and a cost of living crisis. The economy has suffered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russo-Ukrainian War. On 18 July, Panama City saw the country's largest protest. President Laurentino Cortizo's government deal to cut fuel prices was rejected by trade unions. Protestors blocked sections of the transcontinental Pan-American Highway. On 27 July, security minister Juan Manuel Pino Forero said that the roads were clear for the first time. On 2 August, the teachers strike concluded.

On February 15, 2023, 42 people were killed in a bus crash in Panama. The bus was headed to a migrant reception center in the town of Gualaca when it crashed in Gualaca District, Chiriquí Province, in the west of the country, about 67.8 km (42.1 mi) from the Costa Rican border.

The 2022 Liga Panameña de Fútbol or 2022 Liga LPF was the 35th season of the Liga Panameña de Fútbol (LPF), the top-flight football league in Panama, and the third under the management of the Liga Panameña de Fútbol. The season began on 4 February 2022, when the Apertura tournament started, and ended on 12 November 2022 with the Clausura tournament Final.
