On 27 April 2023, early in the morning, a fire broke out in a coach of the Karachi Express train, leaving at least seven people dead, including four children and a woman. The event happened as the train was traveling from Karachi to Lahore in Sindh's Khairpur district near Tando Masti Khan. It is yet unknown what started the fire. [1]

Background

Before the train arrived at the Rohri station, the railway authorities reported that the fire had begun in the business class compartment. The train's driver halted travel and began removing passengers. The fire was extinguished, and the rescue mission was over. Following the afflicted cabin's separation from other compartments, the affected train continued on its route to Khairpur. A woman allegedly perished while attempting to jump from the train to escape the fire, according to the authorities. [2]

Khawaja Saad Rafique, Minister of Federal Railways and Aviation, commissioned an investigation into the event. The investigative team arrived in Khairpur to ascertain the origin of the fire and any potential government negligence. [3]

Reactions

Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives. He sought a report from the commissioner and RPO Faisalabad and directed to take legal action against the driver responsible for the negligence that led to the incident. The CM also instructed that the best medical facilities be provided to those who were injured in the accident. [4]

Speaking about the incident during a National Assembly session, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique suggested that sabotage may have been involved. [5] The minister promised a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which would reveal why the woman had to leap and how long it took the train to halt when the chain was pulled. The minister emphasized the necessity for provincial funding to increase rail safety and security measures in order to prevent further tragedies. [6]

The Karachi rail crash was a train accident between the Fareed Express and the Bahauddin Zakaria Express that occurred on 3 November 2016 at 7:18 PST at Landhi station, in Karachi, Pakistan. The Fareed Express was parked at the Landhi station when the Bahauddin Zakaria Express, which was traveling from Multan to Karachi, collided with the Fareed Express from behind, killing 21 people and injuring 65 people. Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique originally attributed the crash to the engineers of the Bahauddin Zakaria Express for failing to see both yellow and red signals earlier en-route, but Senator Saeed Ghani attributed the crash to a green signal being accidentally activated on the track the Bahauddin Zakaria Express was traveling on.

Khawaja Salman Rafique is a Pakistani politician who is currently serving as Minister of Specialized Health in Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's cabinet. He has previously served in Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif's cabinet as Minister for Specialized Health and he also has served as Advisor and Special Assistant for Health. He is a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since 2024 and was before that from April 2008 to March 2013, from September 2013 to May 2018 and from August 2018 to January 2023. He also served as Minister in Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz's Cabinet. He was one of the main key figures in handling dengue in 2010.

Kohat Express is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Rawalpindi and Kohat Cantonment. The trip takes approximately four hours to cover a published distance of 177 kilometres (110 mi), traveling along a stretch of the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line, Golra Sharif–Basal Branch Line, Kotri-Attock Railway Line and Jand–Thal Railway Line. People have been demanding to run another passenger train on this route, but no other is started yet.

On 6 August 2023, at 13:18 PKT, ten coaches of the Hazara Express travelling from Karachi to Havelian in Pakistan derailed near Nawabshah, in Sindh. At least 30 people were killed and more than 100 were injured.
