Pakistan Railways is the national, state-owned railway company of Pakistan with its headquarters in Lahore. Founded in 1861 as the North Western State Railway and headquartered in Lahore, it owns 7,789 kilometers (4,840 miles) of operational track across Pakistan, stretching from Peshawar to Karachi, offering both freight and passenger services, covering 488 operational stations across Pakistan.

Statistics

There have been 27 major railway accidents during March 16, 2002 to June 7, 2021 [1] . There have been 537 railway accidents from June 2019 to June 2024 including 313 leading to loss of life or serious injury [2] . Federal Government Inspector of Railways said they are seeing decline in railway accident in last 4 years. This is an incomplete chronological list of railway accidents and incidents in Pakistan.

The Ghotki rail crash occurred on 13 July 2005, at around 3:40am local time near Ghotki, Pakistan. No. 24 Dn train stopped at the station of Sarhad was hit from behind by the following Karachi Express train, causing several cars to derail; these were then hit by a third train running in the opposite direction (Tezgam). A total of seventeen train cars, carrying over 3000 passengers, were wrecked. Estimates of the death toll ranged as high as over 130. It was the worst train accident in Pakistan in fifteen years.

The Mehrabpur derailment was a fatal railway accident that occurred shortly after 02:00 local time on 19 December 2007 near the town of Mehrabpur in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

Khyber Mail is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Karachi and Peshawar. The trip takes approximately 32 hours, to cover a published distance of 1,764 kilometres (1,096 mi), traveling along the entire stretch of the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line. The train named after the famous Khyber Pass, located in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Khyber Mail is one of Pakistan's oldest and most prestigious passenger trains that has been continuously running since 12 February 1920. The Train has completed its 100 years of Service on February 12, 2020. The Train departs Karachi Cantonment at 22.00 hrs every night, Lahore Junction arrival next night 19.45 hrs & departure 20.20 hrs. The train reaches Peshawar Cantonment at 06.00 hrs on 3rd morning. Return timings is also same in Peshawar Cantonment to Karachi Cantonment journey. The train departs Peshawar Cantonment at 22.00 hrs, Lahore Junction arrival next morning 07.40 hrs & departure 08.15hrs. The train reaches Karachi Cantonment at 06.00 hrs on 3rd morning.

Bahauddin Zakaria Express is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Karachi and Multan. The trip takes approximately 16 hours and 5 minutes to cover a published distance of 929 kilometres (577 mi), traveling along a stretch of the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line. The train named after Abu Muhammad Bahauddin Zakariya, a famous Sufi saint of the Suhrawardiyya order who lived in Multan between 1171 and 1262.

<i>Akbar Express</i> Pakistani express train

The Akbar Express is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Quetta and Lahore. The trip takes approximately 23 hours and 30 minutes to cover a published distance of 1,225 kilometres (761 mi), traveling along the Rohri–Chaman Railway Line, Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line, Khanewal–Wazirabad Branch Line and the Shahdara Bagh–Sangla Hill Branch Line. Akbar express is the only train which connects Faisalabad with Quetta.

Sangi / Sanghi Railway Station is located in Sangi village, Sukkur district of Sindh province, Pakistan.

The Karachi rail crash was a train accident between the Fareed Express and the Bahauddin Zakaria Express that occurred on 3 November 2016 at 7:18 PST at Landhi station, in Karachi, Pakistan. The Fareed Express was parked at the Landhi station when the Bahauddin Zakaria Express, which was traveling from Multan to Karachi, collided with the Fareed Express from behind, killing 21 people and injuring 65 people. Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique originally attributed the crash to the engineers of the Bahauddin Zakaria Express for failing to see both yellow and red signals earlier en-route, but Senator Saeed Ghani attributed the crash to a green signal being accidentally activated on the track the Bahauddin Zakaria Express was traveling on.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sadiqabad railway accident</span> 2019 train collision in Pakistan

The Sadiqabad railway accident occurred on 11 July 2019 in Rahim Yar Khan District, Punjab, Pakistan. The Quetta-bound Akbar Express collided with a cargo rake at Walhar railway station, due to improper handling of the track switching mechanism. The accident took place around 4:30 a.m., about 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of the district headquarters of Rahim Yar Khan and the train engines were completely destroyed.

On 7 June 2021, before dawn, two trains collided near Daharki, in the Ghotki District of the southern province of Sindh in Pakistan, killing at least 65 people and injuring about 150 others. An express train derailed onto the opposite track, and a second express train crashed into the first roughly a minute later. About six to eight bogies were left "completely destroyed".
