The 2023 Osaka mayoral election was held on 9 April 2023 as part of the 20th unified local elections. [1]
The election was scheduled to in response to the expiration of the term of mayor Ichiro Matsui on April 8, 2023. The incumbent expressed his intention to retire from politics at the end of his term due to the rejection of his proposal to abolish Osaka City and establish an Osaka Metropolis. [2]
To be held in conjunction with elections for the Osaka City Assembly, and the Osaka Prefectural Gubernatorial and Prefectural Assembly.

Fujita, Honda, Matsunami, and Okazaki were primary candidates. Fujita, Honda, and Matsunami were defeated in the first round of voting, while Okazaki was eliminated in the final round, leading to the victory of Yokoyama [4]
The mayoral election was held on 9 April, 2023 and was won by Yokoyama Hideyuki of the Osaka Ishin (Restoration) Party. 2,214,966 Osaka City residents turned out to vote which included 1,059,525 male voters, and 1,155,441 female voters. Voter turnout was 48.33%, which was a drop from 52.7% in the previous 2019 election. [7]

The Japanese political process has two types of elections.
Yukishige Okubo is a Japanese politician of the Democratic Party of Japan, a fmember of the House of Councillors in the Diet. A native of Isahaya, Nagasaki and graduate of Nagasaki University, he had served in the assembly of Nagasaki Prefecture since 2003. After running unsuccessfully for the House of Representatives in 2005, he was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time in 2007.
Aomori 1st district is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives in the national Diet of Japan. It is located in Northern Aomori and covers the cities of Aomori, Mutsu and the Higashitsugaru and Shimokita districts along with the northern half of the Kamikita District.
Ōsaka 7th district is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives in the national Diet of Japan. It is located in Northern central Ōsaka and covers the cities of Suita and Settsu. As of 2012, 352,998 eligible voters were registered in the district.
Ōsaka 10th district is a single-member electoral district of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the national Diet of Japan. It is located in northeastern Osaka and consists of Takatsuki city and Shimamoto town, the only remaining municipality of Mishima county. As of 2016, 321,805 eligible voters were registered in the district.
Ōsaka 19th district is a single-member electoral district for the House of Representatives, the lower house of the national Diet of Japan. It is located in southern Osaka and consists of the cities of Kaizuka, Izumisano, Sennan, Hannan and the towns of Kumatori, Tajiri and Misaki in the former county of Sennan. As of September 2012, 307,237 eligible voters were registered in the district.
Ōsaka 12th district is a single-member electoral district for the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet of Japan. It is located in North-eastern Osaka and covers the cities of Neyagawa, Daitō and Shijōnawate. As of September 2012, 342,226 voters were registered district, giving its voters slightly above average vote weight.
The first stage of the 18th unified local elections in Japan took place on April 12, 2015. The Liberal Democratic Party under leadership of Shinzo Abe was the overall victor, winning many races including all ten gubernatorial races and 1,153 of the 2,284 assembly seats at stake. Further elections for municipal mayors and assemblies took place on April 26.
House of Councillors elections were held in Japan on Sunday 10 July 2016 to elect 121 of the 242 members of the House of Councillors, the upper house of the National Diet, for a term of six years. As a result of the election, the Liberal Democratic Party–Komeito coalition gained ten seats for a total of 145, the largest coalition achieved since the size of the house was set at 242 seats.
The Japan Innovation Party is a conservative, neoliberal and right-wing populist political party in Japan. Formed as Initiatives from Osaka in October 2015 from a split in the old Japan Innovation Party, the party became the third-biggest opposition party in the National Diet following the July 2016 House of Councillors election.
Hirofumi Yoshimura is a Japanese politician currently serving as the governor of Osaka Prefecture. He assumed office in April 2019. He has been described as a conservative.
The Hyogo at-large district is a constituency that represents Hyogo Prefecture in the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. It currently has five Councillors in the 242-member house, but this representation will increase to six by July 2019.
The Tottori-Shimane at-large district is a constituency of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. It was formed pursuant to a 2015 revision of the Public Officers Election Law from a merger of the Tottori and Shimane at-large districts, the two smallest districts in the country, to address the imbalance in representation between rural and urban voters. The district has 1,068,348 registered voters and was contested for the first time at the House of Councillors election that was held on 10 July 2016.
The Ibaraki at-large district is a constituency that represents Ibaraki Prefecture in the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. It has four Councillors in the 242-member house.
The 2022 Nagasaki gubernatorial election was a gubernatorial election held on 20 February 2022 to elect the next governor of Nagasaki, a prefecture of Japan in the north-west of Kyushu.
Nobuyuki Baba is a Japanese politician who has been the leader of the Japan Innovation Party since 27 August 2022. He is also a member of the House of Representatives in the Diet, currently for the Osaka 17th district.
The 2023 Osaka Prefecture Gubernatorial election is scheduled to be held on 9 April 2023 as part of the 20th unified local elections. Incumbent Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura won re-election to a second term, defeating Taniguchi Mayumi who was supported by the Liberal Democratic Party, Constitutional Democratic Party and several minor candidates.
Ōsaka 17th district is a single-member electoral district of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the national Diet of Japan. It is located in western Osaka and consists of Kita-ku, Naka-ku and Nishi-ku of Sakai City. As of 2022, 329,205 eligible voters were registered in the district.
The 2023 Japanese unified local elections were held across the country on 9 and 23 April 2023. In total 15,047 candidates were elected in 1008 races with a high of 1,685 in Hokkaido and a low of 1 in Okinawa.
The 2023 Osaka City Council election was held following the expiration of the council's four-year term on 9 April 2023, marking the first half of the 20th national unified elections. There were 128 candidates running for 81 seats in the city's 24 wards. The political parties contesting the election were: the Osaka Ishin, Komeito, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Japan Communist Party (JCP), Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP), and the Reiwa Shinsengumi (Reiwa).
