Leader before election

Mark Rutte

Leader-elect

TBD

The 2023 People's Party for Freedom and Democracy leadership election will determine the lead candidate of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) for the 2023 Dutch general election, and therefore the party's next political leader. The election was triggered by Mark Rutte's announcement on 10 July 2023 that he would resign as party leader, following the collapse of the fourth Rutte cabinet on 7 July 2023. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Contents

On 13 July 2023, the VVD party board put incumbent Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius forward as its preferred candidate for the position. [6] [7] Nominations for other candidates open on 17 July and close on 13 August. [8] The election is set to be held from 21 to 27 August 2023. [8] In case no candidate receives an absolute majority of votes, a second round will be held from 29 August to 4 September 2023. [8]

Background

The fourth Rutte Cabinet resigned on 7 July 2023 after the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Democrats 66 (D66), and the Christian Union (CU) failed to agree on family reunification for refugees fleeing armed conflict. Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the disagreements between coalition partners "irreconciliable", and informed King Willem-Alexander that his entire cabinet would be resigning. Three days later, on 10 July 2023, Rutte announced his retirement from politics, and that he would be stepping down as leader of the VVD. [1] [2] As a result of the government crisis, the House of Representatives is set to be dissolved, with early general elections expected to be held in the autumn of 2023. [9] [10]

Candidates

Several party prominents, such as Klaas Dijkhoff, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Sophie Hermans, Edith Schippers and Christianne van der Wal, have announced that they are not available for or interested in the position. [11] On 10 July 2023, former MP André Bosman was the first to announce his intent to contest the election. [12] On 12 July 2023, incumbent Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius announced her ambition to succeed Rutte as party leader in an interview in De Telegraaf . [13] Her candidacy was subsequently endorsed by the party board. [7] On 17 July 2023, Bosman withdrew his intended nomination in favour of Yeşilgöz-Zegerius's candidacy. [14]
